The Portland appeared in France in the 18th century. Their claim to fame is their ability to flower nearly continuously. They are reported to have been brought to England by the Duchess of Portland as a cross between a Damask and Gallica seedling and a China, but there are conflicting stories on this. Peter Beales theorizes that the remontancy came from R. damascena bifera, not a China, because of the general habit of the plants. Portland roses are usually fragrant and are often smaller plants.
