Greentop Fishing Report Read Our Fishing Report Saltwater Updated: October 14, 2020 by Stan Cobb (Next Update: October 21, 2020) Saltwater – Speckled Trout are biting throughout the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Anglers are enjoying fantastic action with paddle-tailed soft plastics, jerkbaits, topwater baits, and live bait. Good numbers of fish as well as sizable fish are being caught in places like Lynnhaven Inlet, Mobjack Bay, The Rappahannock River, and the James River along with its tributaries just to name a few. There have been some sizable Sheepshead caught from within the Chesapeake Bay over the last few days with peeler crab being the bait preferred. Folks are finding Tautog here and there. And there's still some large Drum being encountered in the lower bay. Flounder catches are thriving on ocean wrecks but there haven’t been many reports of Flounder from within the bay. >>>>>>>continue Freshwater   Congratulations to Chris Daves of Spring Grove, Virginia for winning the Bass Fishing League® regional on the tidal James River over the weekend. His 3-day total was 50.1 pounds. Daves reported catching his fish with a square-billed crankbait and a ribbon-tailed worm. Keith Estes of Spring Grove finished 4th with a 3-day total of 44.4 pounds. Both anglers will advance to the All-American, which is the grand finale of the BFL Division and usually a stepping stone to the big leagues. Good luck gentlemen! During the 3-day tournament, many chose to fish the Chickahominy and James Rivers. Both rivers have been fishing very well and the bite usually increases as we enter November. The upper James has risen again with the level at the Westham gauge being at 7.3 feet. This is a bit fast and stained for Bass fishing. The upper James usually fishes better when the levels are between 5-6 feet. Kerr Lake is currently at an elevation of 300.71 feet. This may increase over the next few days depending on the rainfall amounts received to the Kerr watershed. The Crappie fishing has been good for numbers of fish as they are being found along the bridges under boat docks and relating to brush piles in depths of 12-24 feet. Bass are being caught at various depths also. Brush rocks and docks are all attracting the Bass. A lot of the bigger Bass have been caught on topwater baits. Soft plastics and jigs have been good also. In many places, roaming Bass can be found chasing and surfacing on schools of baitfish. A general rule during the fall period is “Find the bait, find the Bass.” The same applies to landlocked Stripers. But that’s easier said than done sometimes. Fall Bass and Stripers can become size-specific. Smaller baits are often the key to success at this time. Weekly Fishing Report: Steve Chaconas National Bass Guide Service Head for Cover   Weather might be a factor this week. Better days will be when it’s cloudy. But every day, finding the right speed will produce fish in grass or wood.   Cool start to the week with highs in the upper 50s and overnight lows around 50. The rest of the week will warm up into the upper 60s and overnight lows in the upper 40s. Dry this week too. Water temperature will be around 60.   Starting with a high tide, fish will be in pads and up against shore cover. Buzzbaits will catch fish and expose their location. Tie to 30 pound test Gamma Torque braid. Trailer hooks help with short strikes. Cast along pad edges and into pockets. Cast along laydowns too. Better looking spots are worth a few casts to trigger strikes.    If the water is stained and there are a few clouds or chop on the water, ¼ ounce spinnerbaits with white skirts and gold blades are also a good search bait at higher tides. Tie these to 12 pound test Gamma Edge fluorocarbon line. Slow retrieves are best.   As the tide falls and fish move to pad or grass edges, pitch jigs to pad points or grass remnants. Shallow wood is a good target too. Two color schemes are good on the river. Craw patterns and black/blue patterns with matching craws will work when tied to 14 pound Edge fluorocarbon. When fishing shallow cover, make quiet presentations.   Squarebill crankbaits, lipless cranks, and bladed jigs also cover many depths, speeds and conditions.    During fronts, go to finesse soft plastics, shaky head, drop shot and Neko rigs on spinning rods with 15 pound braid with 10 pound fluorocarbon leaders. . >>>>>>CONTINUE FISHING REPORT By Charlie Taylor CONTAINS REPORTS FOR MOST LAKES, RESERVOIRS AND RIVERS AROUND THE STATE Fishing Report - October 30, 2020  OVERVIEW - With the temperatures up and down like a yo-yo, the fish are confused. Water temperatures are still in the low to mid 60s throughout the state. This has stalled the baitfish and bass movement to the backs of the creeks. As a result, bass are orienting to remaining green grass and to flats adjacent to dropoffs. Rocky points and boat docks are also holding fish, primarily on the main river channels and deeper creek channels. POTOMAC RIVER - D.C. - Larger bass are located in deeper water adjacent to structure. Dropoffs are the better choices, particularly when submerged wood cover exists. Smaller bass are roaming shallow gravel banks adjacent to the dropoffs. Small plastic grubs, jig 'n pig and spinnerbaits tipped with plastic trailers are the better choices for lures. Yamamoto Senkos, rigged wacky style are working very well, as are split shot rigged, four inch worms. Live bait is working well for those who are using it. Choose a bank that drops into 10-20 feet of water and fish the baits on the lip of the drop, or near the bottom for best results. When using live bait, put one bait up on the shallow portion of the bank while fishing the deeper water with a second bait. This will enable you to catch the fish that come up into the shallows to feed. Blue Plains sewage outfall is a prime spot for bass during colder weather. The water here is warmer than the surrounding water, causing the fish to feed more often. Crappie are schooled and biting well on live minnows in Washington Channel and Washington Sailing Marina, around the boat docks and submerged pilings. The Spoils, Fletchers Cove and Belle Haven Cove are other good locations for crappie. Catfish are available on cut and live bait throughout the river channel. Yellow perch are active around Roosevelt Island, taking small minnows, plastic grubs and horsehead jigs. Stripers are active in Washington Channel, Blue Plains, Fox Ferry and the Virginia Shoreline off the downriver point of National Airport. Almost any white or silver, minnow imitating crankbait will take these strong fighting fish. POTOMAC RIVER - BELOW WOODROW WILSON BRIDGE - Grass is dying and breaking up as the water temperatures drop. Bass are pulling off into deeper water adjacent to the grass beds. Shaky Heads, tipped with Zoom Trick Worms and drop shot rigs are better choices in deep water and around wood cover such as boat docks. Weightless Trick worms and large spinnerbaits, fished on the outside edges of the grass, will take bass that are roaming for food. Topwater baits remain good early and late in the day, particularly Zara Spooks, Whopper Ploppers and Zoom Horny Toads. Small crankbaits, retrieved very slowly, will take the fish in the shallows. Live bait is working better than artificials throughout the river system. Crappie are biting well in some of the creeks, notably Aquia and Mattawoman. Small minnows are the ticket. Stripers are active around almost any cover or structure with current breaking around it, although most of them are small. Crankbaits in white or silver are working well, as are Sassy Shads on 1/2 oz. jigheads. . >>>>>>>>CONTINUE Chickahominy Lake Fishing Report – October 28, 2020 Posted on October 28, 2020 by Capt. Art Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-514-1486) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the low to mid 60’s in the central lower lake on Wednesday (10/28/2020). The lake level was about 3 inches above the top of the dam and the water was light to medium brown and very slightly cloudy in the central lake, with much more murky water near windy shorelines. Many blue cats and bullheads were along drop-offs and in channels in the main lake, but some were on flats and in creeks. When active, cats were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Most crappie were on deeper main lake flats or on channel edges, frequently near brush piles, and were becoming more active with cooler water. Active crappie were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curly tail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small swim baits. White and yellow perch were scattered or in loose aggregates on deep flats and drop-offs in the main lake and when active were hitting small live minnows, swim baits, and jigs. Larger bluegill and shellcracker were in 5 to 12 feet of water on channel edges, frequently on wood cover. When active, bluegill and shellcracker were hitting live worms, Nikko nymphs, flies, and small swimbaits. Pickerel and bass were located along a few shorelines, around cypress trees, on flats, and on channel edges, especially near the mouths of creeks. When active, bass and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms, crank baits, jerk baits, and jigs. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Hudson Reese and Bobby Hall had 2 bluegill and 21 crappie. Tricia Pearsall had 18 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 22 crappie, 1 white perch, and 3 bass. Wayne Dementi and Brian Dementi had 3 bluegill, 10 crappie, 5 white perch, and 1 yellow perch. Tom Porter had 13 bluegill, 21 crappie, 1 warmouth, 3 blue cats, 1 largemouth bass, and 1 striped bass.
