August 22,1998 - Appocalypse Now: The US and terrorism

A war has not been fought on American soil in over 130 years. Perhaps this is why our population feels such invulnerability. Modern technology however does not make a terrorist attack within US borders a remote possibility, it makes it god damn likely. We will not be prepared and many will die as hostilities further escalate on both sides. This will be a terrorist war. We have perhaps the greatest, most organized terrorist orginization on our side, the CIA. But even this will not be enough to win a war in an area which does not want us. No matter how many puppet states (Israel) we set up, no matter how many governments we buy with oil money, the general population is still fundamentally at odds with western influence. I do not support terrorism, and I think that the US should respond. However, the direction which US response has taken leads us all down the road to open warfare.

Woe to those who wave the flag and cheer for escalation of hostilites. This is a war we are unprepared to fight. A war against a guerilla force of enemies we can't see. Does anyone remember Vietnam?. The US with all its military might and global prowess is despised among the third world nations. This is a popular underground front of radicals who are willing to die for their cause and will take the war directly to the US population. If Saddam Hussein is supposedly the next Hitler, Ben-Ladin will be the next Ho Chi Minh. Only this time we are not fighting a poor undeveloped nation inside its own borders, we are fighting an international, well funded group of state sponsored terrorists. The stakes have been heightened, and the range has been expanded.

To the youth of America I will tell you this. Turn off MTV, put down the gravity bong, and pick up a history book. And five years down the road, when you are choking down your last breath of nerve gas in the middle of a foreign desert, you will have the dignity of knowing why Uncle Sam needed you to die this time. Do you think you have a clue what nerve gas does to the human body. For those who would be quick to judge these statements as pacifism, I will state for the record that I am not a hippie, in fact I hate hippies. I am a realist living in age where the greed and ambition of men is finally equalled by their means of conquest and destruction. I am uneasy at the thought of what happens in the real world. Our leaders are playing tough guy games without any concept of the consequences. The consequences will affect you and I and every American for years to come. Wave the flag, follow your leaders, and kick a few hippies on your way to the Afghan desert. Bye, have fun.

Its your decision whether or not to support the actions of a weak President and a beaurocratic, hypocritical government with the cost of your life. If the US government represented truth justice and liberty for all, then I would gladly fight and die for those principles. Unfortunately this is not the case here. I do not support terrorism and I do not support third world colonization for corporate profit either.

Consider this, where did the bombs fall in Sudan? They sure as hell weren't aimed at the Sudanese government which has enslaved thousands of its own citizens in nazi work camps and fights a war of genocide on its Christian and African population. No, they were aimed at factory workers and civilians in an unconfirmed target. Also I've recently learned that oil deposits have been discovered in Southern Sudan, where the government captures its slaves and kills christians. Look for more missle attacks and troop buildup as the US government, which previously didn't give a rats ass about the Sudanese people, champions the new cause of liberation for an oppressed nation. I'll be waiting to see the "peacekeeping" troops arrive in South Sudan. Its all about profit margin folks. This isn't the last time you'll be hearing from Sudan.

And while we're on the subject of political corruption, lets ask ourselves another question. Where did this fucking idiot bin Laden first start blowing things up? Wasn't he fighting the Russians in Afghanistan? Do you honestly think that a half assed army of religious fanatics hiding in the hills could defeat the Soviet army by themselves? I think not. Where do you think he got his supplies and tactical training? I'll give you three guesses. Don't forget that during the 80's the US government also supplied Iraq with weapons, money, and technology. Our buddy Saddam was fighting the Iranians and doing our dirty work for us. Who was the biggest threat to US power during the 80's? That's right, the Soviet Union. Given our record in Vietnam, Korea, and Central America, do you honestly believe that the US government would sit back and do nothing as the Soviets tried to expand their sphere of power? No. So we give this mountain goat Bin Ladin a bunch of guns, bombs, and training and let him do his worst rather than getting our hands dirty. Once the Soviets are gone, Bin Ladin looks around for the next Great Satan on whom he can wage his holy war. Guess who that is folks. Me, you, and every other American. For those of yo who doubt me, read the paper. It is well documented that a missle attack was necissary because of heavy anti aircraft installations in Bin Ladin's camp. Do you think he found that stuff in the hills of Afghanistan? No. American guns which kept the Russians out of Afghanistan, and which now keep the US out of Afghanistan. Thank the CIA folks, they always look out for American interest.

For those of you who would be quick to label terrorist war as our only alternative, I do have a solution to this dilemma. In fact I have two valid, relatively bloodless solutions which will never occur in real life:

1. The US and UN pull their troops out of the middle east and other countries which do not want them there anyway. We convert our economy and natural resource consumption so as not to be so dependant on oil, thereby reducing the need for troop presence to keep order. This would be simpler than you have been led to believe. The only problem being that certain key corporate powers would lose money on the deal. The gasoline combustion engine has been obselete for over 50 years, however our economy and lifestyle is dependant on oil. Do the math and figure out for yourself what is really going on. Once the UN has pulled out, these countries will probably kill each other off in a few decades, but at least they won't be bombing US embassies in the process.

2. The US fights fire with fire. Surely the CIA has learned enough covert operations and terrorism from its secret death campaigns in Central and South America to fight a terrorist war on its own terms. Reduce civilian and US military casualties with covert attacks on terrorist bases and the infrastructure. This would be a plausible alternative to troop buildup and launching cruise missles into neutral countries.

History repeats itself folks, do not turn a blind eye of complacency. Do not feel invulnerable inside this plastic society we have created. We are now as vulnerable to foreign attack as 28 Arabs or 100,000 Iraqi civilians were. Have fun and enjoy watching our government preach the doctrine of war until the war is taken to them. This is the new world order and it sucks. And this is the way war will be waged in the future. Stay tuned to CNN for updates.

The Last Word Mail Sack

Look what I pulled out of my sack today. It's a letter from Dave Hanysz. He seems pissed:

Name: David Hanysz

Comments: My Name is David Hanysz, I am a Gulf War Veteran now living in Germany. Sir many of the points you stated make sense, but you are living in a dream world if you think that by publishing this measly little document on the internet is going to change things. Instead of writing articles about how bad our government is, think about the alternatives........... Namely communism, facisim, dictatorship and so on. I fought for my Country and no matter if my Country is right or wrong, it's alot better than what other Countries have to offer. I know, I've seen 90% of the world so far and believe me, we (the U.S.A is right in what it is doing). If you do not agree with it's policies, their is alway's an option for a one way ticket to anywhere at the Airport. David Hanysz In der Stellohe 2, 92249 Vilseck, Germany

Damn. How do I respond? Well, let me begin by saying that I don't know which piece you're referring to Dave. If it is the Osama bin Ladin piece, then your criticisms are justified. If it is the Orwell piece, then I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Lets assume for the sake of argument that it was the bin Ladin piece that you're pissed over. First I will state that vetrans are one of the few groups for whom I have undying respect. The fact is that while I may not agree with some of the U.S. foreign policies, this does not equal a condemnation of the US armed forces. If a war is unjustified, I place the blame on the governments which started it and not on those who fight. Second, I don't know what the "measly" comment was all about. I'm not trying to change the wrold with this webpage, just invite some criticism and thought. Thus far I have suceeded. My condemnation was no more harshly set against the US government than it was against the middle east terrorists, NATO, CNN, and a host of other contributing parties. I just call them as I see them. You've seen 90% of the world, which is a lot more than me. You probably know more than i do, that is why i invited your criticism. I don't hate America and I'm not leaving anytime soon. You had a valid point in that the US is better than most other places. Perhaps it is, but being the lesser of two evils does not make one a saint. If you think the US government isn't doing the same thing as these other nations we hate and despise, just write a letter to the CIA and ask them what the hell happened in Cambodia and Central America. Or better yet, write the NSC and ask them, i'm sure you won't be heard from for a long time afterwards. If you think I haven't examined the alternatives, read the Orwell essay and tell me about totalitarianism, fascism, and communism. Truth of the matter is, they're all the same. The rich control the poor and the common man gets screwed. Don't take my criticism of US foreign policy as a sign of Anti-American sentiment. I'm not out in the street waving a flag but I am not burning one either. i love this country as much as the next person, and it pisses me off to see what is happening to it on a daily basis.
