Kayci awoke a few minutes later. Her head was throbbing, and the
salty tears
that were slipping down her cheeks stug her face. Every inch of her
body
hurt. She struggled to sit up. Pain shot up her side, and she cried
out in
agony. She heard footsteps coming toward her. A young man, around
nineteen,
stood above her. He crouched down next to her.
"Are you okay?" he asked, concern evident in his eyes.
Kayci could only whimper in reply. Nick tried to see how badly she
was hurt,
but it was much too dark.
"Would you mind if I took a look at you?"
Kayci shook her head in reply. Big mistake. The sudden movement made
the
pounding in her head worse. This time, the pain was almost
unbearable. It
took all of her will to refrain from screaming. Nick's heart went
out to the
young girl.
"NICK!", Nick head snapped up. He saw Brian walking toward him. He
had
completely forgotten that he was waiting for him.
"Nick, what happened? I was...", Brian trailed off when he saw
Kayci.
"She's too afraid to talk to me. Do you think maybe you could get
her to tell
us what happened?", asked Nick in a soft voice, almost a whisper.
"Miss, are you okay?"
"My side hurts a lot. And my ankle...", more tears welled in her
eyes, and
spilled over, slipping down her cheeks.
"Awww...Don't cry sweetie. How old are you?"
"I just turned sixteen. My name is Kayci."
Nick spoke up,
"I think we should take you to the hospital Kayci.
Just to get
you looked at."
"Okay", she whispered.
Nick scooped her up into his arms gently, and they walked back to
Brian's
car, Brian trying to cheer Kayci up. Nick noticed that even through
her angelic smiles, she still looked frightened.
"You'll be okay Kayci. I promise..."
