When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, the highway from Enumclaw to Auburn was designated as part of SR 167. SR 167 was changed in 1969 to head south from Auburn to Sumner, replacing the SR 163 designation. The Enumclaw to Auburn highway was redesignated as SR 164. Today, SR 164 is 14.82 miles long. Although the State Highway Log does not show it, the Certification of Routes through Cities and Towns lists Cole Ave in Enumclaw as SR 164 Spur. This spur is approximately 1/2 mile long.
