When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, Alt US 99 started at I-5 Exit 256 in Bellingham and headed north past Lynden to the Canadian border. When the Washington State portion of US 99 was dropped from the US highway system in 1969, Alt US 99 was renumbered SR 539. Today, SR 539 is 13.85 miles long.
