SR 706 begins at Jct SR 7 at Elbe and heads east to the Longmire entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. This is part of the most direct route from Tacoma to Paradise inside the park. The 1990 session of the state legislature added "Road to Paradise" to the SR 706 designation. SR 706 is 13.64 miles long
Before 1964, SR 706 had been part of the Tacoma-Mount Rainier branch of PSH 5.
