When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, the SR 970 designation was not used. In 1975, US 97 from I-90 Exit 85 near Cle Elum to Jct SR 131 at Virden was redesignated SR 970. SR 131 from Virden to Ellensburg became US 97. SR 970 is 10.31 miles long
