Britax Convertibles Tethered Rear-facing

On this page, you will see pictures of Britax convertible car seats being used with the tether in the rear-facing position. Britax convertibles have a patened Versa-Tether. This tether and Britax car seats have been tested and approved for use while rear-facing. PLEASE NOTE that there are currently *4* CONVERTIBLE car seats on the market that allow a tether to be used in the rear-facing position. The 4 convertibles that allow for a rear-facing tether to be used are the: Britax Roundabout, Britax Roundabout Advantage, Britax Galaxy and the Britax Marathon. PLEASE DO NOT tether other convertible car seats while in the rear-facing position. Other seats have not been tested to be used in this manner. Doing so could put your child at risk for injury. Also note, that these pictures are of the Britax Roundabout, Britax Roundabout Advantage and the Britax Marathon convertible car seats. I will be addding pictures of the Britax Galaxy at a later date.

Using a rear-facing tether is very different from tethering a forward facing seat. I thought I would compile pictures and information to help owners see how others have sucessfully tethered Britax convertible car seats. Please remember these photos are for *DEMONSTRATIONAL* purposes only. If you have further questions, I would suggest contacting Britax at 1-888-4BRITAX. You can also refer to your car seat's owner's manual.

Official Britax Web Site On Britax's site you can view their products, their Q & A page, order accessories and find the online manuals for their seats. These photos are in no way meant to replace your owners manual! PLEASE refer to your manual and call Britax and/or your vehicle manufacturer with *ANY* questions.

Britax Tether Connector Strap/D-Ring

All Britax convertibles will come complete with a tether connector strap (also referred to as a d-ring strap). Mine is a small peice of black webbing, with a metal d-ring on one end and a fabric loop on the other end. This strap is used to anchor the Britax convertibles in the REAR FACING ONLY position. This device is used when you cannot find a actual tether anchor to attach your Britax convertible tether to. This device can be used to loop around a approved spot in your car for rear facing tethering. In the online manual for the Roundabout it states:

"A proper anchorage point in front of the restraint is one that is any structural metal part of the vehicle (one that does not move). These may include:

a. Seat frame bar that the tether connector strap can be wrapped around
b. Seat mounting rail that is bolted to the floor of the vehicle
c. A fixed vehicle seat belt anchor to the floor
d. Vehicle seat leg that is bolted to the floor"

Before using your tether connector strap, it is important you read your manual and find a proper spot to anchor your seat. If you cannot find a spot to anchor it, STOP and put the tether back in the pouch on the back of your car seat until you can call Britax. It is fine to use any Britax convertible without the tether.

Tether Connector Strap

These are close up pictures of the Britax Tether connector strap. The first picture shows the tether connector strap laid out flat. In the second picture, I pulled the metal d-ring through the loop at the end of the connector strap. This is the strap you would use to tether your Britax convertible if you couldn't find a approved anchor to use.

Examples of the Connector Strap in Use

The 1st picture on the right was taken in a 1998 Buick Century sedan . The connector strap is wrapped around the metal section of the seat belt stalk. The metal piece I attached it to; is immobile and bolted to the vehicle. It also does not interfere with the seat belt track. A passenger in the front seat, may move their seat forward and backward without interfering with the tether connector strap.

The second picture was taken in a 1998 Ford Windstar. I attached the tether connector strap to the seat belt stalk on the passenger side. It is sturdy metal underneath the plastic case and is bolted to the vehicle seat seat. This seat belt stalk is NOT movable. It does not rotate in any way and is securely bolted to the leg of the vehicle seat.

Britax Roundabout Tethered Australian Style

This is a picture of the Britax Roundabout tethered using the Australian method of tethering. The tether goes down the back of the vehicle seat and is anchored using the tether connector strap. The car seat is installed in a 1998 Ford Windstar, with bench seats. The seat is installed on the middle bench, near the slider.

Britax Roundabout installed Rear-Facing in the Swedish Method

In this picture, the Roundabout is installed in a 1998 Ford Windstar. The tether is connected underneath the vehicle seat to the factory installed tether anchor. This is what it looks like from the back of the seat. This seat is tethered using the Swedish method. This method attaches the tether to the anchor behind or under the car seat. I also included a close up shot of what the tether looks like attached to the anchor under the seat.

Britax Roundabout Installed and Tethered Rear-facing

This is another shot of the Roundabout installed in a Ford Windstar using the Swedish method of tethering. The main difference between this picture and the above picture is how the seat in anchored. In this picture, the seat is anchored to the front passenger seat's factory installed, tether anchor. The other picture is a close up shot of the tether anchor and tether hook.

***Note***
The above picture was taken in a 1998 Ford Windstar. In the Windstar manual it specifies which direction the tether clip must face. Be sure to read your own vehicle manaual prior to using a factory installed anchor.
