Dawn Summers Biography

Dawn Summers, 16, is The Key, and Buffy's sister. After protecting The Key for centuries, the monks of the order of Dagon were forced to hide it from Glory by turning it into a human girl. They placed Dawn with the Slayer, disguised as a younger sister, and implanted memories in everyone in Buffy and Dawn's lives that made it seem as if Dawn had always been a part of Buffy's family. It is unclear how the implanted memories are activated or if people outside of the Summers' lives know about Dawn. The insane and those "outside of reality," such as clairvoyants, are able to see that she is not real, and Buffy was able to identify her as part of a spell by going into a deep trance. Joyce seemed to recognize that Dawn was not her daughter at certain moments when she was being affected by her brain tumor. Dawn was initially unaware of her true nature, but learnt the truth, much to her distress, when she broke into the Magic Box and read Giles' diary. Glory's aim in this world was to find the Key — it turned out the Key could break down all the dimensional barriers, and Glory intended to use Dawn in a ritual to get back to her own dimension. This ritual would result in Dawn's death, and the unleashing of countless demon dimensions on earth. There was a complication with Joyce’s operation and she died suddenly. Dawn tried to resurrect her, but changed her mind at the last minute and reversed the spell. But one shock after another took its toll and so Dawn started to skip school and steal. When Buffy found out about Dawn not going to school, they found out that if Buffy didn't make Dawn go to school Dawn would be taken into foster care or sent to live with her father. So Dawn tried a bit harder. Glory, the hell god who was looking for the key, discovered the Dawn was the key, came after them and captured Dawn so that she could perform the ritual to open the gates between dimentions. Dawn was taken to the top of a tower and was cut by Doc, a Glory worshiper, and her blood dripped off the tower and opened the portal just as Buffy made it to the top of the tower. Buffy realized that Dawn was made from Buffy's blood and Buffy jumped off the tower, closing the gates between dimentions. This left Dawn with no family, but Willow and Tara moved into Buffy's house to take care of her and they used the Buffybot to make the authorities think that Buffy was still alive. Three month's later, Willow resurrected Buffy and Dawn's life looked like it would go back to normal. However Buffy seemed a bit off and they later found out that she had been pulled out of heaven and was understandably depressed. So Dawn started to steal again and even made out with a vamp, although she ended up staking him. Buffy has since improved her relationship with Dawn, who is now attending high school at the newly rebuilt Sunnydale High School. Buffy has begun training her in fighting and researching. With Sunnydale High directly over the hellmouth things soon go from bad to worse in Sunnydale. With floods of potential slayers coming to Sunnydale, Dawn is almost mistaken for one of those potentials. But she's not and carries on living her normal life, well as normal as you can get. In the final battle Buffy attempts to send her sister away, but her sister comes back wanting to fight and survives.
