My mama never tired of telling the story of my encounter with Houdon's famous statue of George Washington.  I walked slowly round and round and exclaimed loudly, "Look, Mama!  He has short hair in front and a pony tail in the back!"

She was less thrilled to relate this tale.  Her brother's insurance office was located on one the higher floors of this building.  One day she took me to his office for a visit.  As he tried to pull me on his lap, I let out a blood curdling scream.  All the staff came running, thinking I had fallen from the window.  From gritted teeth, she explained to them, "No, a man tried to hold her, and he wasn't her father."  I rarely saw her that angry with me...

When I was two years and four months old, I saw a U.S. Marine in his dress blues collecting money for needy children at Christmas.
Forget the toys, I wanted HIM!
Seeing such a glorious sight, I fell hopelessly in love, and remained so.

"And if to-morrow shall be sad,
Or never come at all,
I've had at least to-day!"

~ Edward Hersey Richards, "Today, Stanza 3"

(1874 - ?)

The music playing is "Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!", chosen because of an incident which
happened in 1949 when I was two years old - and which I remember quite clearly.
Daddy and Mama took Eleanor and me to a nice restaurant,
one of their favorites, in Richmond, Virginia called Awalt's.
The atmosphere was quiet, reserved, dignified, sedate, and subdued -
in short, all the things that I was not.
I decided the place needed livening up, so upon entering,
at the top of my lungs (think Ethel Merman),
I sang "Ta-ra-ra-BOOM-de-ay! Ta-ra-ra-BOOM-de-ay!, etc."

I was right. The place really came to life then...

Of the tune, I know not. The lyrics were written in 1891 by Henry J. Sayers (? - 1932) for a minstrel show number.

Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!

A sweet Tuxedo girl you see,
Queen of swell society,
Fond of fun as fond can be
When it's on the strict Q.T.

I'm not too young, I'm not too old,
Not too timid, not too bold,
Just the kind you'd like to hold ~
Just the kind for sport I'm told ~

Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!
