Chasing Butterflys

One day while I was in one of my quiet moods, a very nice thing happened. A flying thing came and sat on the grass by me. After my experience with the flying creatures of the night, I decided that I would study this one, pursue it, but not try to eat it.
It had great big wings, and it was very pretty..

It's wings really looked too big for it's body.. kind of like my legs look too long for my body.. But maybe this creature wasn't fully grown either, I don't know.
Mom says these things are called butterflies.

I like butterflies, so I have been watching them alot.
They come in different colors, different sizes, and they don't all behave the same way. They seem to be alot like puppies and people as far as I can see. They like pretty things too.. They sit on flowers alot, and they look like they sparkle when they fly. They even look like they sparkle when they sit still!

I have the butterflies half figured out. I know they fly, so I have the "fly" part of their name understood. I just don't know where the "butter" part of their name comes from.

Do they like butter?

Is it because some of them are yellow, like butter?

Do they taste like butter?

If it's the taste thing, I'm not going to chance finding out. My track record as a taster of insects is not good.

Besides...they are too pretty to eat, and there is always the chance they could taste WORSE than the firefly.

Mom has a picture in our livingroom that is about butterflies..(she likes butterflies alot) I think she wouldn't care if I put the words from it here.. They aren't her words anyway, they are words from a man named Nathaniel Hawthorne. I think he must have been a very nice man, because it sounds like he liked butterflies too!

Happiness is a butterfly,
which when pursued,
is always just beyond your grasp,
but which, if you will sit down quietly,
may alight upon you.

~Nathaniel Hawthorne
