My First Christmas 1999

It is December. I have now spent eight months on this earth as a Chocolate Labrador Retriever. Something seems to be happening this month, and having never seen these things before, I am not quite sure how to react.

First there was a big dinner when dad, mom, and I visited my human sister and her family in Minnesota in November... boy, did all that food smell good! They told me that it was Thanksgiving...and from then on, we'd be getting ready for something called Christmas.

Since this is my very first year, there have been all kinds of new things for me to see and do, but Christmas.... I am not sure that I know what to expect... but if all the fussing around so far is any sign, it must be something very, very special!

Mom took all kinds of boxes out of the closet, and she looked and looked through them.. I tried to help, but she said only she knew what she was looking for... I think she found what it was, because we went outside and while I played in the back yard, mom put some lights on the deck railing, and hung up a great big green circle with lights on it, on the utility shed in our yard. I wasn't sure why she was hanging all these things up, but when it got dark, she plugged a long cord in the outside outlet, and the deck railing lit up with lights that look like icicles, and the green circle has little tiny lights of all different colors, AND a great big shiny gold bow on it!! Mom told me the green circle is a "wreath".. I have been looking at some of the neighbor's houses, and some of them have wreaths too. They are all pretty, but I like ours best because mom and I made it.

Then we got a great big box out of the garage, and she said there was a tree in the box. I had never seen a tree that lived in a box before, but after I helped mom with it, it really does look like a tree.

It
doesn't
taste like a tree,
or smell like a tree,
and I have never seen a
tree that grows in the house
with blue lights and other pretty
things
on it.

Mom says the tree is special, and it only is for Christmas, so I spend alot of time just looking at the tree, because she says Christmas only comes once a year, and it will be a long time until I get to see it again, and I will guard the tree so Santa can see how pretty it is too!

I have been trying to figure out just who this Santa guy is, and here is what I have come up with so far.

Santa and his wife live at the North Pole with a bunch of little guys called elves. (How far is the nearest grocery store from the North Pole?)

He works very hard all year making toys for children. (How does he pay for all the supplies to make the toys?)

On Christmas Eve, he loads all the toys in a big sleigh and delivers them all around the world. (Just how BIG is his sleigh?)

The sled is flown in the night by eight reindeer, plus one more if the night is foggy. (What does Santa do if there is a thunderstorm? And where are the reindeer's wings?)

Since not many people leave their doors unlocked anymore, Santa gets into the houses by going down the chimney of the house. (How does he know there isn't a fire in the fireplace?)

Santa has been delivering toys for hundreds of years.(Doesn't Santa know about retirement? But what if he DID retire......what would happen then??)

I am sure that I'll never find out the answers to all these questions, but maybe some of them I will.

I'm leaving cookies, milk, and Milk Bones for Santa.. that way I should have all the bases covered, just in case!

I have not done anything naughty since mom said if I did, there would be a real good chance that Santa wouldn't bring me anything.

Except a stocking full of COAL

Whatever that is.
