Isle Royale National Park 2002

Welcome to my Isle Royale page. My Dad and I took this trip the 2nd week of September 2002. I wanted to hide away on my 40th Birthday (9/11), so where better than a remote wilderness island in the middle of Lake Superior.
Sunday, September 8th
We left Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 5:30 a.m. and arrived in Grand Marais, Minnesota at 4:00 p.m. The drive between Duluth and Grand Marais was beautiful, with lots of scenic overlooks and waterfalls .We spent the night at the East Bay Hotel in Grand Marais . We got a room in the older section of the hotel for $35 a night. The room had a double bed and a single bed, and a sink (the bathroom was a couple of doors down the hall).
Monday, September 9th
Woke up early and had breakfast at the Hotel restaurant. Fantastic Blue Berry Pancakes! Arrived at the Grand Portage Monument at 8:00 a.m., where the MV Wenonah docks. At 9:30 a.m., in heavy fog we leave for our journey
Me (Ed) (still 39 years old)

We arrived at Windigo at 12:30 p.m., registered our itinerary with the Park Service, and were on the trail by 1:00 p.m.. From Windigo we traveled counter clockwise 30 miles on the Feldtmann Loop. It was the longest hike my father and I had ever done. I'm so happy that my father could be part of this adventure.- Ed.
