Plot Summary | |
We all grew up being told stories. Stories of magical places; stories of heroes and stories of villains; stories of places and things that could only exist in your wildest imaginings. We are all shaped by the stories we are told. So what do you do when you find yourself IN such a story? Can a normal person measure up in a world of larger-than-life people and larger-than-life deeds? Well, we'll have to. Because now, this storybook world is under attack by something... ELSE. Something we NEVER heard stories about. There's something that sets this world apart from all the others. And they want it, badly. But we don't even know who they are, what they want, or what it is that's so special about this place. All we want is to get home. But for some reason, now they want US dead. And they'll do everything in their power to prevent us from succeeding. This is how our story begins. Only time will tell how it will end. |
Project Oracle is my in-progress RPG Maker 2003 RPG.
Begun in early 2004, perhaps earlier, the project was designed and written by an uncreative teenager, and it showed. The plot was contrived, the characters were blatant self-inserts of me and my school friends, and the dialogue was stiff, bland, and generally not up to par. Following a long hiatus, the project was officially dropped in 2005.
Fast forward to the summer of 2009. Sifting through the dustbins of my past projects, I came upon this long-abandoned RPG. Feeling a sudden spark of creativity, I decided to revive it and make it not suck.
The game was unpolished. That was no secret. The list of things to do was long, and I certainly had my work cut out for me. Among the problems were:
So I spent a few months, as of this writing, hammering out the kinks and fixing what needed fixing. Among the improvements I've made are:
To name a few. But I've gone on entirely too long about this already, so without further delay, let's get into the actual content.

Tech Demo: Spells, Animations "Project Oracle is my RPG Maker 2003 game project. I originally started it back in high school, and made a lame plot, lame dialogue, and a bunch of mediocre graphics for it. Now, five years later, I'm picking it up again and applying some much-needed polish to it. I've revamped a lot of the dialogue sequences, I've completely made over the special effects, and I'll start on revamping the characters soon. This is a demonstration of some animations and spell effects I've implemented into the game. Yes, the spell names are borrowed from the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series; I'll be renaming them later to fit in better with the Final Fantasy feel I'm aiming for with this game. The framerate's a bit iffy in some spots near the beginning, especially around the spell animations. Bear with me here. Also, I apologize for the quality. x.x; The characters and party configuration you see in this video are temporary; they'll be renamed, rearranged, and possibly even redesigned in future versions of the game. I've played a few tough boss fights with this party, and it is NOT a very well-balanced combination of characters; I'll rearrange the party setup once I've implemented a few more characters. The enemy you see here is going to be a chapter boss later on; she's unfinished right now, though, so I thought I'd use her as a punching bag for your amusement. :3 Character stats aren't finalized, either; you'll notice that Taylor has a metric fuckton of HP, and Matt and Taylor's physical attacks do less damage than I think they ought to. The battle theme in this video is the normal Battle theme, not the Boss theme." Some of the sound effects, music, and animations in this video are not up to date. | |
New Character Showcase: Jackson, Clara "See my first Project Oracle video for more info on the project. Just uploading another video because I REALLY like the way these two turned out. Incidentally, they're the first two new characters I've implemented since picking the game back up. See if you can tell who I used for the base sprites. :D Jackson's element is Water, and he's an S-Type character (meaning he specializes in physical strength more than magical); he'll be the bruiser of the party he's in, though his magic will still be fairly decent. He just won't get very many useful magic abilities, but his physical arsenal will be more impressive. He uses Pierce attacks. Clara's element is Almighty (she uses Zan and Megido spells), and she's a W-Type character (meaning she specializes more in magic than in physical strength). She's not the prototypical Squishy Wizard, though-- that's Joey's job. Instead, she'll have a surprisingly capable defense, but this is tempered by slightly less magical skill. She also uses Pierce attacks. Hoping to implement a few more characters soon, and then I'll get back to redesigning the existing ones. Incidentally, the characters you saw in the last video are going to be redesigned and/or renamed, but Jackson and Clara's current designs and names are final. Hahah, there's a little bit of slowdown in the framerate during the "victory dance" part. XD Blame Fraps for that." Some of the sound effects and music in this video are not up to date. | Story Exposition (Group 1, Chapter 1) [Part 1] "Apologies for even MORE framerate problems. Here, we introduce Group 1, the only player party that's fully implemented at this point. This group consists of two characters I've already introduced, plus a newcomer, Beth. Beth's element is Earth, and she's an S-type character. While Jackson has balanced offensive and defensive capabilities, Beth's strength lies slightly more to the defensive side, though she still has a mean physical attack. We start off with a look into the first chapter, from the perspective of Group 1. I've included a random battle, complete with the new battle theme, and the first boss battle. I cut it short there for the sake of length, and I'll probably be uploading a part two shortly. If the enemies in the first boss fight look familiar, they should; they're the ones I used as punching bags in the video introducing Jackson and Clara. Now, however, you can see them in their proper context. They're also a lot harder now, as bosses should be. The framerate for the first fight is REALLY choppy and I hate it. Once again, I apologize for that." |
Story Exposition (Group 1, Chapter 1) [Part 2] "This is the second part. The flow of the dialogue at the beginning is a bit awkward, and I want to work on it. It gets the point across, though, for now. The boss fight shown in this video is entirely optional; you examine the suit of armor to initiate it. If you fight it, then you'll get a hint to a puzzle that comes up later on; if you skip it and do the puzzle without any hints, then you can come back to the suit of armor later and get a free Phoenix Down for your trouble. And no, you don't get to see the contents of the note; it's a spoiler. I may or may not upload a video of the chapter boss fight later. It's kind of long, and will probably require a whole video to itself. I guess it depends on interest; does anyone care to see it?" |
