Lesson 12: Werewolves

The werewolf is found worldwide, though it is believed to have originated in northeren Europe. Humans turn into werewolves only when bitten. There is no known cure, though recent developements in potion-making have to a great extent alleviated the worst symptoms. The Wolfsbane Potion, if taken in the week preceeding the full moon, will keep the werewolf safe. It allows the wizard or muggle to keep his/her mind when they transform, and thus are able to curl up as a harmless wolf and wait for the moon to wane again. Before the potion was discovered, once a month, at the full moon, the otherwise sane and normal wizard or Muggle afflicted transforms into a murderous beast. Almost uniquely among fantasitc creatures, the werewolf actively seeks humans in preference to any other kind of prey. It is very painful to transform into a werewolf, and if by some chance there are no humans around to bite, the werewolf will bite and scratch itself instead.

Homework: Worth 50 points
1. Where did the werewolf originate?
2. When must the Wolfsbane potion be taken?
3. How does it alleviate the symptoms?
4. What creatures does the werewolf go after?
5. What will it do if it cannot find this creature?

Lesson 11: Defensive Skills

There are many important skills to remember when there's a situation where you're face-to-face with some form of dark magic. If you're dueling another wizard, your best bet is the expelliarmus charm. I'm sure you've learned about this in your other classes, so we're not going to cover it in detail. When facing some sort of creature, it is necessary to remember what you've learned from school. Many magical beasts can be controlled by charms and hexes for long enough to get away. However, the most important skills are your eyes, ears, and intuition. You must be aware at all times of your surroundings. Keep your eyes and ears open, use your head and think logically. This is especially necessary in situations where you might not have your wand. There is a good chance that you'll be able to escape just by using common knowledge.

Homework: Worth 40 points
1. What should you do when facing another wizard?
2. What should you do when facing a creature?
3. What are your three most important skills?
4. Where are these especially necessary?
