Almost all of the spells and charms in the Harry Potter books have been derived from Latin words. Examples include "Accio," the summoning charm, which is Latin for "to summon." "Expelliarmus," the disarming spell, is a Latin combination of "to expel" and "arma" which means weapon. Also, "Nox," which cancels out Lumos, is Latin for "darkness."
