My name is Valeria n'ha Lucilla, and I am a member of the Guild of the Renunciates, also called the Free Amazons of Darkover.

You have never heard of the Renunciates? Well, you have come to the right place! The Guild of the Renunciates is a sisterhood formed to provide the women of Darkover, who traditionally have little freedom, with an alternative to living as little more than property to a male guardian. A woman who wishes to join the Guild swears an oath, to be as sister, mother and daughter to all her Guild sisters, and never to live in subservience to any man. We may marry, but only as freemates, and may bear children if we wish to do so. We have forfeited the "protection" of men, in exchange for a freedom of life that few Darkovan women have!
