This Regiment was originally organized for 12 months service in June 1861 under the designation of the 6th North Carolina Volunteers with a strength of about 1200 men. On June 16, 1861, it was composed of 12 Companies from the western part of the state. The 12 Companies were recruited from the counties of: Buncombe, Burke, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Polk, Rutherford and Yancey. The Regiment was formed at Raleigh, North Carolina with company members being from Burke County, North Carolina. They were to become known as "Burke Tigers." On November 14, 1861, by special order #222 it was redesignated the 16th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. The Regiment conducted itself honorably and gallantly throughout the War of Southern Succession. The 16th North Carolina participated in 27 major battles. On April 9, 1865, the 16th North Carolina surrendered 95 members, (12 Officers and 83 men), at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
