This is my new recreation vehicle

Description as purchased:

  • Circa 1989 MAX II by Recreatives Industries.
  • 16 HP OH160 series Tecumseh engine (Recreatives told me they call them boat anchors).
  • Auxiliary Fog Lights
  • 3 point roll bar
  • Factory track system wit cleats (no picture yet).
  • 12 volt power outlet.
  • 2500# winch.
  • 44 lb thrust motor guide trolling motor.

Notes:

  • The roll bar appears to be a typical MAX II roll bar with the rear part appended to it. Anyone with info on this let me know via email.
  • I have sold the trolling motor. I have no large bodies of water that would require it.
  • The rear deck lid (black one) is gone. Anyone know where I can get a replacement?
  • This picture was taken by the previous owner.

What I have done:

  • Replaced the starter...what a difference.
  • Made a wiring harness for the accessories - it was a mess, wires everywhere. Now have a switch for the auxiliary lights.  Keyed switch operates the head lights.
  • Swapped the amber fog lights for clear driving lights and moved them above the roll bar.
  • Made a remote control box for the winch on a 20 foot cable.
  • Removed dash controls for winch fearing my daughter might get hurt. I will add them back with keyed protection when I get a plow made.
  • Re-covered the lower seat (back to be redone in time).
  • Reworked the battery holding system (previous owner relocated it to the rear for easy access).
  • Cleaned front left chain adjuster and replaced spring. Re-installed chain adjuster. (12/14/01).
  • Installed holding brake spring. (12/14/01).
  • Removed old axel bushing from front left axel. Installed new bushing. (12/14/01).
  • Welded on sprocket collar washers on left front left axel. (12/20/01).
  • Drilled axel bolt hole in axel to 1/2" and inserted a 1/2" o.d x 3/8" i.d. collar through axel (the 7/16" hole was worn too much). (12/20/01).
  • Re-installed front axel. (12/20/01).
  • Replaced frozen starter solenoid. (01/10/02).
  • Inspected vehicle for drive train problems. Found that one of the transmission bolts was missing and others were loose. Fixed this problem.(01/10/02)
  • Found that front right bolt on engine mounting bracket was not the right one. The treads didn't allow it to be tightened down enough (the rubber bushing wasn't compressed at all) so I added some washers.(01/12/02)
  • Removed 6 of 8 drive chains and one axel. (01/12/02)
  • Fabricated and installed new upper body support. Made it out of 1/2" conduit.(01/12/02)
  • Removed and overhauled all of the axles and sprockets to remove excess wobble.
  • Removed upper body to inspect the machine for wear, decided to pull the frame since there were only a few more bolts holding it in.
  • Removed all detachable parts from the frame and began cleaning the parts and frame.
  • Cleaned and painted frame with rut preventative paint.
  • Put a custom bend on the shift lever. It used to hit the seat when pulled into reverse, now it seems a lot better.
  • Cleaned bottom tub.
  • Repaired a crack in the tub by welding it. The previous owner had patched it with fiberglass resin but it still leaked a little (not enough to impair water travel). The weld seems to be tough and water tight.
  • Re-assembled parts on frame.
  • Added re-enforcement to the rear hitch.
  • Added re-enforcement to the engine mounts which showed signs of stress.
  • Replaced auxiliary brake spring with a heavier one.
  • Replaced brake bands (may have to adjust once everything is back together).
  • Dropped frame back in tub (it looks pretty clean).
  • Made a new wiring harness for everything using a section of 14-10 control wire (this made it really nice).
  • Installed the winch and added a ¼” aluminum backing plate(it had none before).
  •  Installed roll bar with re-enforcement to make it more steady (without the rear third bar).
  • Fabricated a choke mounting point.  The previous owner had the choke positioned where it would never reach the FULL position.  To start it he had a tube running into the air cleaner into which you had to shoot some starting fluid (not good).
  • Added a rear rack that folds up for engine compartment access.  The rack is also removable by pulling a few pins.  The rack has removable railings too.

Plans:

  • Engine may need rings and/or carburetor.  Most folks say it is probably just valves that need some attention.
  • Should add a cut off for the 12v power outlet so my kids don’t get hurt if they put their finger in the socket
  • Make a universal accessory mounting system.
  • Make a snow plow.
  • Build a front cargo rack.
  • Take some pictures.
  • Possibly upgrade engine to a 18 or 20 HP Honda.
  • Who knows?

Questions I Have (Email me with answers):
