Miscellaneous
Langlands Rose Bowl
In 1981 two community policeman working in the Linthouse area
of Glasgow, namely Jim Laird and Neil McLeod, who worked closely
with Langlands School for Handicapped Children, organised a competition
involving all the bowling clubs in the area, to raise funds to
build a small swimming pool for the school. Jim who was a member
of Hillington Estate Bowling Club and Neil who was a member of
Hillpark Bowling Club managed to get a local jeweller to provide
a trophy for the winners. This trophy was known as the Langlands
Rose Bowl and was first played for at Fairfield Bowling Club in
September 1981. The first winners were Hillington Estate Bowling
Club with a rink comprising of George Palmer, John McGilp, Billy
Hughes and Bob Peacock. On receiving the trophy on behalf of Hillington
Estate, President Archie McKenzie intimated that as the winners
Hillington Estate would host the following year's event. This
formula was adopted for all subsequent winners and all money raised
through entry fees, donations and a raffle was given to the school.
Over the years a good deal of money has been raised for this school
and indeed it is the main recipient of charity money disbursed
by Hillington Estate Bowling Club. Unfortunately this trophy has
not been competed for since the late 1990s, but hopefully will
be resurrected in the not too distant future.
Govan League
In 2001 Hillington Estate Bowling Club won the Govan League for
the first time since 1967. In a keenly contested contest both
ourselves and Linthouse Bowling Club were equal on points at the
conclusion of the league fixtures and therefore a play-off had
to be arranged. This took place at Govan Bowling Club on Saturday
25th August 2001 when two rinks from each club competed against
each other. Hillington Estate managed to prevail in both games
which were a credit to bowling, both with the quality of shots
played and the dignity and decorum displayed by the players of
both clubs. It was a remarkable achievement in that Hillington
Estate used only nine players throughout the campaign. The following
were the nine players: John Hill, Jackie Ralston, Charlie McDevitt,
George Palmer, Brian Hope, Steve Berry, Jackie Moffat, Joe Brisbane
and Jim Dorward.
Honoured Member
Dick MacTaggart M.B.E.
It may also be of interest to note that Dick MacTaggart M.B.E.,
arguably Scotland's best-ever amateur boxer was a member of the
club for many years before retiring to Troon. Dick won a gold
medal in the lightweight division at the 1956 Olympic Games held
in Melbourne, Australia and won the Val Barker Trophy, which is
awarded to who is judged to be the best boxer. He also won European
and Commonwealth gold medals and was British champion on numerous
occasions.
