The Kitsune Incident
Kitsune? What is a kitsune?
Those who enjoy learning about legends and stuff like that may or may not have heard of the kitsune. They were fox-spirits who appeared in old Japanese legends. I don't know a lot about them, so if I get something wrong in here, let me know, 'kay?

Kitsune are called werefoxes by some people. Originally I heard that their power is determined by the amount of tails that they have, but apparently that's not quite true. Their power is actually determined by their age. the older a kitsune is, the more power he/she has. And they don't get old like mundane critters, they just get more powerful as they age. A kitsune can be killed only with jade, but I have no idea just why. It's probably their only weakness or something.
Antoher thing I learned about them is their ability to shape shift. This is one of their powers, designed to hide them whenever needed. A kitsune can appear as a fox or a human, but can also appear as a cross between the two if they so choose. (Personally, I think that in this state they would only have one tail, but don't hold me to that.) They are also very crafty characters, and are very difficult to catch or even see unless one actually lets you, which possibly happened at least a couple of times, since there are legends about them.

And what does this have to do with Tails?
Well, a lot of people have wondered why Tails has two tails. For a long time, Sega and Archie Comics really didn't give a concrete answer to that. Finally, in Sonic Super Special 9, The Return of the Sonic Kids, a sort of explanation was given. It revealed that Tails was actually born in Mobotropolis right before the Coup, and that his parents were foxes. But both of them, as far as I know, have only one tail. So wouldn't that make him a fox as well?
Well, normally it would. But more recent issues of Sonic also state that Tails is the Chosen One, probably to restore Mobius back to what it once was. That would mean that he is not an ordinary fox. This is why a lot of people are questioning as to whether Tails is fox or kitsune. Kitsune have special abilities, and if he IS the Chosen One, then probably does too. This is questionable though, since the only time he's had a lot of power was when he changed into Turbo Tails.
But what if Tails isn't the Chosen One?
Oy. I don't even want to try to explain that one. I just think he has to be, since the Ancient Walkers gave him the title.
Anyway, these are mostly my thoughts on the subject. Archie comics will eventually reveal the truth, but it's about to drive a lot of fans crazy just thinkin' about it. I can't decide, since nobody seems to know if there are kitsune on Mobius or not. If so, then I would say that Tails is one, but if there aren't, then I guess not.
