70s invasion ; MUD / glam girl MARGOT HENDERSON

DROP EVERYTHING and RUN single

updated as of april 12th '04

greetings this page is a further look at MUD the super 70s glam rock band, consider this our 3rd section on MUD , in march of '04 we received some MUD music containing all 4 songs MARGOT HENDERSON sang with the band, plus ROLY featuring ROB DAVIS, and RAY STILES, plus solo LES GRAY, rare MUD tracks, and a live concert from '77 !

this single 'DROP EVERYTHING and RUN' '78 featured MARGOT HENDERSON who sang lead vocals on the a and b side............... 'TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT', she also sang on the next single 'RICO', and it's b side 'make a buck' '80, this 2nd one was released under the alias RING, and was really the last single from MUD,

the next paragraph was sent to us by a Mud fan from europe....

Margo joined the band. About February 1979. Les left the last week of December 1978. She has had a few solo release, most of which are pretty good. No albums (to our knowledge). the sinlges a friend says exist are the a-sides; "Little Girl" , "London Town", "Keep On" which actually got quite a lot of radio play. She has also written a lot of stuff with Sam Brown and sung on her albums. he actually got a couple of songs Mud did with Margo as demos that weren't released.!!!!

we did review a single and b side in the 2nd week of March, we've revised it since then

'DROP EVERYTHING AND RUN' ! * '78

what an EXCELLENT single, those of u reading this even if u never heard of MUD U SHOULD SEARCH OUT THIS GREAT LOST TRACK.......this is a GREAT 70s rock sound meets new wave, afterall this was '78, BLONDIE fans would love this song as well as fans of SUZI QUATRO, and PATTI SMITH,.....MARGOT sings in that street-rock sound, tough chick persona, and vocals similiar to one GENYA RAVAN'S sound of the late 70s......cool bass, synths shine, this song is a LOT OF FUN, shoulda , coulda been a BIG hit, but the times were turning against MUD......this appeals to both new wave audiences and glam fans....

'Jimmy was a winner back in his home town. The people came to see him play from miles around. Then one morning he woke up and looked himself in the face. He said Im going round in circles. I aint going no place. This working foir peanuts is getting way out of hand. Ive had about as much of it as I can standE

Stop, drop everything and run. Stop, drop everything and run. I want fame, fortune, my name up in lights. Goodby small time, from tonight. Stop, drop everything and run.

Jimmy gave his notice, made it down to the smoke. Well it wasnt too much later he was hungry and broke. He was paying out good money for a hole in the wall. Giging every night and earning nothing at all. He said, The world that I was dreaming of was way out of reach. Id rather be a bigger pebble on a smaller beach.E

Stop, drop everything and run. Stop, drop everything and run. I want no fame, fortune, my name up in lights. Its Hello home townEfrom tonight. Stop, drop everything and run.

Back amongst his friends he had to swallow his pride. He thought the grass was greener on the other side.

Stop, drop everything and run. Stop, drop everything and run. I want fame, fortune, my name up in lights. Goodby small time, form tonight. Stop, drop everything and run.

' TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT' ( b-side) ' 78

GOOD #, STRONG rock sound, similiar to SUZI QUATRO's sound of the time,.......... 'COULD IT BE THAT U COULD NEVER FIND TIME FOR LOVE AND ROMANCE, OH WELL YOUR HUNGRY, SITTING ON THE SIDELINES, AFRAID TO TAKE A CHANCE,........( chorus ) .....'NOW I'M TELLING YOU YOUR JUST TAKING THE EASY WAY OUTTAKING THE EASY WAY OUT'.....

'rico'

que pasa ? this one don't sound like MUD at all, this is bland rock very much out of step with the new wave of the time, sounds like an attempt at RICKIE LEE JONES style songwriting ( who was a GOOD singer ) allthough it's not nearly as good, and they got some bad lyrics here.....'RAIN FALLS TO THE GROUND GIVING THE GAME AWAY, PAIN LEAVING NO SOUND LEAVES U NO WORDS TO SAY, I CAN GIVE U MY SYMPATHY.........(later)......' U THOUGHT THIS LADY WAS EASY MEAT, TAKING'.........(chorus),.....'RICO YOU GAINED THE MOONLIGHT, U WANTED ME DAY AND NITE, RICO U THOUGHT U WERE DYNAMITE'...........this song is very un-dynamite :)........

'MAKE A BUCK' (b side) ' 80

much better than 'rico'....similiar style to ' TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT',.....pounding drums, heavy bass, MUD's guitar sound progresses, 'PLAY THE WHEELS EVERY NIGHT AND DAY, I'M GETTING CLOSER NOW THE FEELINGS RIGHT, I'M ( to be continued )

(listening to these 4 songs conjures up ideas of what could have been for MUD fans, afterall MARGOT had a GREAT vioce and one imagines somewhere in a collection of MUD sits an unreleased lp of songs recorded with her, but ahh u know were just dreaming....) and yes here are some tracks and a concert which are out there on bootleg is u can get them -

MUD LIVE AT FOLKESTONE WITH Margo 1980 !

WOW bet this sounds great !!

MUD demos featuring Margo : BELLA DONNA, MY LIGHT

this one-time glam girl today is a teacher in the u.k., here is a quote borrowed from a MUD site which came from a site called 'applesandsnakes.com

"Poet, storyteller, writer and performer. Margot leads workshops in schools and galleries, as well as devising and directing community theatre performances. She works across art forms and has been involved in countless residencies. As a freelancer she has worked extensively at the Tate Gallery, developing projects that link word and image. Margot also works with carers and children together and is a trained arts therapist."

MARGOT HENDERSON today

MUD rare tracks

'CAN`T STOP' ( YOU`LL LIKE IT ) '79

mellow background vocals accompany a slow number, with great synth work........'I KNOW U KNOW THE WAY I FEEL ABOUT U BABY, I GUESS IT SHOWS IN EVERYTHING I DO, I WANT THE WORLD TO SEE IT AIN'T NO PASSING THING, AND I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT U'.....

LES GRAY solo track

LES GRAY's MUD

' WHEN HOLY ROCKS' '93

fast MUD guitars...' WHEN HOLY ROCKS, SHE'LL SET YOUR SOUL ON FIRE, WHEN HOLY ROCKS SHE REALLY HAS A BALL, WELL 1,2,3, SHE REALLY DRIVES U MENTAL, WHEN HOLY ROCKS IT's CHRISTMAS TIME'......!.....guitar solo rules................this song has GREAT MUD-like spirit and enthusiasm, background singers adding cool 50s styled vocals 'bop,bop'....

LES sometimes released singles in this period under the name Tulsa McLean. )

ROLY

this one were a side project of MUD in ' 78 featirng ROB DAVIS and RAY STILES, they released 2 singles, not sure if they recorded any other songs under this alias....

'DON' T EVER CHANGE'

shiny, SPARKLY MUD-pop, this is the type of MUD song that sounds really nice in the evening when your sitting back drinking hot cocoa with friends, with some good reefer......' ( aaahhhhh)......U NEVER WEAR A STITCH OF LACE, AND POWDERS NEVER ON YOUR FACE, YOUR ALWAYS WEARING JEANS EXCEPT ON SUNDAY, PLEASE DON'T EVER CHANGE, NO DON' T U EVER CHANGE, PLEASE DON'T EVER CHANGE, I KINDA LIKE U JUST THE WAY U ARE, .....U DON'T KNOW THE LATEST DANCE......'

'YES I DO' ( b-side)

enjoyable pop-rock...'I SEE U, I FEEL U, STARTING UP MY HEART AGAIN, 1 LOOK , 1 SMILE'......and.....' I TRIED TO WALK AWAY AND CIRCLES THAT I STRAY, BUT I CAN'T STOP LOVING U, YES I DO, YES I DO, DO U FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT IT '.........?........

'CAR FRIENDS

ROLY's next single was a BIG step forward into FUNKY disco-rock, with HEAVY bass, congas pounding, cool horns,GREAT vocals from the street girls in the background, if you liked the era of the 70s tv show 'WELCOME BACK KOTTER', you'll like this !.....'WHEN YOUR TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, THOUGH YOUR NEVER ALONE WITH OTHERS, U WANNA REACH YOUR DESTINATION, OH DON'T U WAIT, DON'T BE SLOW'......(chorus) 'EVERYBODY's GOT CAR FRIENDS.........( more lyrics to come ), this is perhaps the MUD team at their funkiest, much more so than say SHAKE IT DOWN'......

'ROLLING PIN' ( b-side)

this instrumental shows the MUD team at an experimental phase, very soothing number, slow, relaxing.....perhaps the band were inspired by CHICORY TIP or LIEUTNENAT PIGEON when they came up with this one....

MUD concert 7 - 12 - 78

well we received an edited version of the above concert from ' 78, here is the track listing and our review !

1 Fun, fun, fun ( Beach Boys cover ) 2 Rocket ('L-L-Lucy' medley at the end ) 3 You've got to hide your love away ( Beatles cover ) 4 Cut accross shorty 5 Lean on me

6 Show me your a woman 7 Dynamite ! 8 Oh Boy 9 Tiger Feet ! 10 Lonely this Christmas

....well now our copy came with an intro, the theme to 'HAPPY DAYS' which fit well....the band cover the 'BEACH BOYS' 'FUN, FUN, FUN' with 75 mph guitar and lotsa enthusiasm, maybe the RAMONES took cue from MUd at one point to develop their sound ?? next is ROCKET which leads into a short version of 'L-L-L-LUCY', those being our favorites well this is a PERFECT performance, allthough the guitar and bass have a more rinky dink sound than the vinyl versions....next is a BEATLES cover with 'YOU'VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY', everyone knows how much MUD likes to do covers, they almost always hit the mark, this is a GOOD cover with synths shining thru....'CUT ACCROSS SHORTY' is pretty good, LES' vocals always deliver.....they do 2 slow ones with 'lean on me' and 'show me your a woman', sometimes one can enjoy the latter tune, other times it can drag depending on your mood......after an explosion and some carnival sounds they play a super version of 'DYNAMITE'.....allthough is that RAY STILES vioce mocking the girls asking for ' TIGER FEET' sounds annoying, 'OH BOY' sounds the same as on record....next they get the band riled up for 'TIGER FEET' of which a GREAT version is done, and the closing 'LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS' is the icing on the cake, LES and the band are in fine form and the show closes with happy fans cheering......... :) !

for more see the reviews of 2 60s demos from MUD on page 2 in their section, and see our other MUD section on the homepage, as well as a couple of pictures in our gateway 1.....

......well, ahh well u changed your name to ABIGAIL ROCKETBLAST......................... !
