MRS. CRUSH'S Grading and Class Policies Page GRADING POLICY: I do not use percentages, I calculate points, but I am listing in parentheses an approximate percentage value for each category. TESTS:(about 40%) Spanish I and French I: Each test has 50 questions. Each test is worth 100 pts. Each test consists of an oral section given first, then a written grammar section. There are approximately two tests per quarter, hence 200 points per quarter. Any failed test may be retaken within 3 days following the day we have gone over the results in class. So, if the test is taken Wednesday, you may retake it on Friday, Monday or Tuesday. You may not retake it the same day we review the test results, which in the afore-mentioned example would be Thursday. The failed test may only be retaken once. The student will receive the higher grade of the two for the test, up to and including a 70%, but no higher. (The student must actually score a 70% in order to receive a 70%). Ex. If a student receives a 60% on a test and upon retaking the test receives a 67%, the student will receive the 67%. Or, for example, if the student should receive a 85% on the retake, the student will receive no higher than a 70% on the retake. "Introduction to Spanish" (basic, level 3): Test policies listed above also apply to the basic, level 3 "Introduction to Spanish" students. However, fewer questions may appear on their tests and the percentage of oral questions will probably be much higher than for Spanish I students. QUIZZES:(about 20%) Spanish I and French I: Each quiz usually has about 20 questions and so is worth about 20 points each. The lowest quiz grade is dropped each quarter. The final tally of quiz points, allowing for the dropped quiz, is about 100 points per quarter. Any failed quiz may be retaken within 3 days following the day we have gone over the results in class. So, if the quiz is taken Wednesday, you may retake it on Friday, Monday or Tuesday. You may not retake it the same day we review the quiz results, which in the afore-mentioned example would be Thursday. The failed quiz may only be retaken once. The student will receive the higher grade of the two for the quiz, up to and including a 70%, but no higher. (The student must actually score a 70% in order to receive a 70%). Ex. If a student receives a 60% on a quiz and upon retaking the quiz receives a 65%, the student will receive the 65%. Or, for example, if the student should receive a 85% on the retake, the student will receive no higher than a 70% on the retake. "Introduction to Spanish" (basic, level 3): Quiz policies listed above also apply to the basic, level 3 "Introduction to Spanish" students, however, fewer questions may appear on their quizzes and the percentage of oral questions will probably be much higher than for Spanish I students. HOMEWORK:(about 30%) The following policies apply to all of my students in foreign language: Each fully completed homework assignment is worth 5 points. If homework is incomplete/ sloppy in any way, points will be deducted according to the degree of incompleteness/ sloppiness. DAILY GRADE:(about 10%) 1 point is given each day if a student is: 1) on task each day: participates in class, ex. activities, 2) pays attention in class, 3) takes appropriate notes 4) is polite and respectful to others 5) exhibits proper behavior and conduct. (This daily point allotment may be upwardly adjusted during the second and fourth quarters due to increased number of points because of increased points added for the exams). Please remember that conduct points may also be given in addition to loss of the daily grade point for any behavior considered inappropriate or unacceptable to the teacher. EXAMS: Exam grades (midterm and final) are each worth two test grades. So, if a student receives a 85% on an exam, the 85% is counted twice and added to the other test grades for that quarter. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 1) Students must be committed to review daily work, i.e. vocabulary, oral practice, grammar, each evening, since learning a foreign language depends heavily on constant, daily practice. 2) A positive, serious and committed attitude towards learning and study is required if success is to be achieved. CLASS POLICIES: Read the Student Guidebook for acceptable and unacceptable behavior. I expect students to treat everyone with respect and dignity. Conduct points will be issued to students who break any guidebook rules and will suffer the loss of the daily grade point. Students are expected to bring their daily supplies to class.
