Here's the Program from the Primera Mesa Redonda de Palenque, Neva Epoca, which took place last week in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico. Khris Villela The program was bilingual. Here I list the papers by title according the language the speaker used in presentation. There were varoius changes in order, etc., from the previously advertized program that you might have seen on Far Horizons's Web Page. Nikolai Grube did not show. Instead Jeff Kowalski presented a paper on the Murals of Mul-Chic. The order of that session was also changed so that Simon and Linda preceded Peter's paper. The first two presented new data on warfare and waht it can tell us about the formation and nature of alliances and the macro-polities of the late Classic. Peter's paper was a summation of many of the war events in Western Lowlands. I will post the my other notes as I transcribe them, if people would like me to. Sorry they are a bit rough. Julie Acuff Linda Schele: The Wars of Pacal Pacal ascends to the throne in 615 and erects his first monument in 645. His first temple is the Templo Olividado. Perhaps the wars explain why he didn't build anything in the first 32 years of his reign. April 21, 599- Reign of Lady Kanal Ikal. In the inscriptions, Lakamha refers to the name of the capital city and Bak refers to the bigger area. We see a record of the ruler of Calakmul throwing down the gods of Palenque around this time. In Group 4 at Palenque, we find a portrait. Pacal's birth occurs on 9.8.9.13.0; Lady Kanal Ikal dies on 9.8.11.6.12; Her son, the great uncle of Pacal, (Ak Kan) ascends to the throne on 9.8.11.9.10. Inscription reads: tied on the headress, for him, the keeper of the royal hat, name, Ah-Sikab, by the doing of, Hanab Pacal (not the great, this one is on the sarcophagus and is apparently the younger brother of Ak Kan and oversees the office). The next set of glyphs talks about the closing of the headband again and mentions Yahal Kak and Ah Sul. Sul means spy, so Ah Sul is the title of the militia leader. These ar the nobles who are intelligence officials. The end of the nest part says that these events take place under the auspices of the first Sahal and Hanab Pacal. Ah Sul also found of fragments founds in the wall of the North Group. He evidently lived through the reign of Ak Kan and into Hanab Pacal the Great. Dec. 10, 610: an event? occurs in Calakmul April 11, 611: attack (2nd one) by Calakmul within a 10 year span on Palenque. Why does the throne go to Pacal's mother? March 9, 612: Hanab Pacal I dies. August 11, 612: Ah Nenol-Mat died Lady Zak Kuk was probably the only person left at all in the royal line-- as a result of the wars, all the others had died. When Pacal turned 12, she immediately gave him the throne. Pacal received the capital in BAD shape. Lintel from Bonampak: May 13, 603; was thrown down, the war shield of he of Lakamha. Yaxchilan is part of the Piedras Negras alliance; Piedras Negras is the biggest power on the Usamacinta in the Calakmul alliance. Piedras Negras Stela: captive is Chok' Tzuk-- not the head of the lineage. Balam is his name. He, the royal keeper of the books, owned by the king of Palenque. An important person from Palenque has been captured by the king of Piedras Negras. Tortuguero Inscription: King Balam Ahaw. He uses the Palenque Emblem Glyph. On February 6, 644, he begins his first campaign in the west. Iwal Ok is the place foundation. This is his first tok pacal (flint shield). A star war against Ah Ox Tekub occurs. Pacal's wife also carries this title. Jan 31, 645: a sacking event follows. Sarcaphagus Lid and Monument 6- sacking event? From the Head at Palenque: a burial is done; under the authority; of the Great Hanab Pacal-- the same sahals pass into the Pacal's reign we see here. On the Tortuguero Monument we see that on November 18 and 25, 649, a capture occurs and there is a sacking of the city. Monument 6 and Sarcophagus (Tortuguero): one year later. The war verb against the tok pacal of a name in Hok Chan (the name of Comalcalco). The head lord of Tortuguero is stabilizing the western frontier. This maybe the time Palenque extends into the west. September 10, 655: Another war by Balam Ahaw of Tortuguero. January 12, 657: war against Tikal by Yukukun (title- uniter of sears; general imperial title). Calakmul attacked Tikal. Shield Skull of Tikal is forced into exile. August 7, 659: exiled king appears in Palenque. The king brings with him the captured palanquin from Yaxchilan to the welcome ceremony. He has refugee status at this point. Next the dedication of the Palace House C takes place. One of the lords named as from the area of Pomona. Pacal sacrifices captives from the eastern frontier of the kingdom. Must have left him alone afterwards. Construction explodes because Pacal distances his enemies. Nine captives are shown on the opposite side of the court. Temple of Inscriptions: 9.11.6.16.17 He arrived Nu Bak Chak from Motul (TIkal emblem glyph with the bird)-- he arrives with Pacal. He is being dressed as a vanquished one of "war title" of the king of Palenque. House C: he died- name- "he entered the road" on July 13, 633. Six chok's are named. May have been the guys who helped him out. Dos Pilas Hieroglyphic Stair 4: in 672, the king of Tikal recovered and fot his army and went to Dos Pilas. The Dos Pilas king goes into exile. December 677: another war occurs; burning recorded; into exile is Nu Bak Chak-- he is kicked out of Dos Pilas. Dec. 20, 677: Pulul (Polol today) war by Yukukun of Calakmul. Exiled to Polol where they attacked again. The exiled king comes home to Dos Pilas. 9.12.6.16.17: Dos Pilas Hieroglyphic Stair 4; 1 katun later-- was thrown down his flint shield, Nu Bak Chak of Tikal by the king of Dos Pilas. On the same day, they painted the guy's bonesand made a mass burial of the bones of people from the 13 provenances of Tikal. Summary: Palenque was attacked and demolished twice by Calakmul. Pacal accedes when Palenque was torn apart. In the first 30 years of his reign, he stablizes the west and then the East. He receives the exiled king of Tikal. Perhaps Balam Ahaw in 679 was Palenque's representative to the Tortuguero war and was killed.
