SCOTT & SHELBY HUNT
'Reverie'
Galaxy Records 2001
In a sense, you could say Reverie is Scott Hunts 3rd solo release, or a better description may be that this is Scott and sister Shelbys first full fledged solo album, though Shelby has appeared on earlier solo releases of Scott's. At any rate, I must tell you that my ears sputter and twitch, and my mouth actually begins to water every time I hear that there may be another Hunt release and I dont mean Hunts catchup, though that is good too.... In fact, rumor has it, that there is yet even another release coming out soon!!!! There IS a God. 'Reverie' was just released, so lets concentrate on only that for now....
This is the best Hunt solo album to date, and the others are no bloody filth. Lets analyze the name for a moment, shall we? Reverie means (according to Heritage) Abstracted thought, or a daydream, or to dream... A perfect title for this 17 song (if you include all those awesome themes between songs) array of nothing but melody, late 60s/early 70s nostalgic sound, soul, and songwriting style ONLY paralleled by say.... the likes of Brian Wilson.... or John Lennon... or.... okay, Ill try to control myself.
Second track, Im For You is a dreamy number that will instantly take you back to a scene in the early 70s with ambient sounds akin to The Carpenters, Bread, America (you get the picture). And I might add - this is no Superstar like rendition with feedback and Sonic Youth secretions, though I very much like that too! This is the real thing captured! Frozen in time morsels - plenty for the taking! Im For You and other songs are complete with lush keyboard and organ parts, layered with crisp acoustic guitar, opulent vocals, truly re(mark)able... (Mark Mikel)... drumming, a small horn section and other sounds produced with.... you know.... those 60ish type instruments like moogs and things that few artists use today, or if they do, they candy coat them if not mutilate them with digital effects. No digital here, as far as I can tell, this stuff seems all analog. Kuel! This second track, Im For You is a true-type crafted replica of the era, and no artist that I know of captures it better than a Hunt. People, do you realize we are only on the second song?... Moving on...
Okay well cover some more here, but you really got to just hear it for yourself.... Third track, West Virginia with a clean lead vocal by Shelby Hunt and a crafty organ and bass part done by Scott. Its a light, upbeat song about that trip to West Virginia.. Im searching for new skies, but I felt fine in West Virginia. Next song (after a light-hearted Summersong theme) is Lady Bug and its another pinnacle point of the album... again dreamy, and well orchestrated - Then theres the 6th track, All You Gotta Do Is Fly, fast becoming my favorite song sung by Shelby. The song is decorated by the spectacular organ playing of Scott, like many other songs on the album.
Other artists who should be credited for this are: Ken Dudley, Mark Mikel, Dave Kosmyna, Rich Seng, Braden Hoffmann, Andy Feyes, Ben Herrick, and Eric Hertz. And also Rachel Melat, who co-wrote four songs with Scott Hunt.
Other Standouts on this album include: Good Bye Sunny Days, the spectacular Whyd You Do That, Summertime, New Mexico The Woman, Rey Rey Cha Cha, What Is Hip Today, Dont Say Nothing.... I think thats every song on the album!!
The songwriting style, music, and captured moods on this album are beyond expectation - beyond the expected level of an unknown local artist or band. And I just want to say that if you are a scout or A&R representative with the music of Hunt on your desk, or in your player and you havent done anything..... the world is going to hell in a hand basket. www.proverus.com |
