OUR LADY PEACE
Interview from 1997
(MUEN) ON 'NAVEED' AND 'CLUMSY' IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU USED ACTUAL VINTAGE EQUIPMENT, BUT YOU USED DIGITAL EQUIPMENT TO GET THAT SOUND, RIGHT?
(Mike) Yes, absolutely. We really didn't have any rules. Whether it be vintage or state of the art. That piano sound at the beginning of Clumsy that sounds like an old cranky dusty upright, was the result of the finest equipment, current state of the art that you can find. During recording we had to manipulate it in order to get it to sound like that. Really what you hear is always the ultimate thing. Other times we hook up a mic to a practice amp, it's like a piece of crap but what it sounds like is what matters.
(MUEN) YOUR MUSIC IS INCREDIBLY EMOTIONAL, ESPECIALLY WITH THE VOCAL RANGE, IS THIS A REFLECTION ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES OR JUST FROM OBSERVING THE WORLD AROUND YOU?
(Jeremy) We are a product of what we are. We don't have any secrets or anything that we listen to that nobody else has ever heard. I think that is the biggest thing that we try to be - is honest. Hopefully that comes through.
(MUEN) WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND THE TITLE, 'CLUMSY'?
(Mike) There is a forgivness to clumsy. Like if your actions are clumsy, you can be destructive without necessarily being malicious. If more people would make the assumption that others are clumsy, be it emotionally or physically, I think the world would have a great deal more compassion, which would kind of be a good thing right about now.
(MUEN) HAVE YOU READ ANY OF THE CURRENT WEB POSTINGS?
(Mike) Every night! I am the resident web head!
(MUEN) WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ALL THE COMMENTS PEOPLE POST STATING THAT YOU GUYS WILL BE BIGGER THAN US?
(Mike) I think it gives people something to talk about. I mean I don't take it seriously because people are jut talking. You can't help but be flattered by the comparison though. They are a brilliant band that we have always admired. They consistently produce great records. But as for "will Our Lady Peace be bigger or smaller than U2 or whoever else?" this is not a contest, this is not a sporting event.
