Mest/Fall Out Boy/Matchbook Romance/Dynamite Boy 2/29/04 Axis, Boston

Mest is a very smart band. Smart enough to bring some talented bands up from the underground on tour with them. I walked into the show without any prior knowledge of any of the opening bands, other then their names. I was somewhat impressed.

Dynamite Boy was up first. They have a strong rock sound, with a touch of screamo thrown in. They are good at what they do, but the sound they have is a bit overdone, the rock world have sveral cities of bands with a similar sound. I will give them this much, they really did get the crowd going.

Next up: Matchbook Romance. It wasn't until their next to last song ("The Greatest Fall") that I realized I had heard them before, on the Atticus Clothing sampler "Dragging the Lake 2". All in all, their set was good. Matchbook Romance has two of the most insane guitarists I've ever seen! As with Dynamite Boy, their sound is similar to many bands saturating the market (Thursday, anyone?) but they make up for it in showmanship. They are worth checking out.

Fall Out Boy amazed me. The funny thing was, even after my friends doing mothing but talking about him, I STILL couldn't help staring at Bassist Pete Wentz with them. While they were staring at him because of his looks (yeah, he's cute, but a bit short for me), I was staring because of his skills. Give him a few more years of touring and practice, and he could become one of the better bassists of our generation. Their songs were incredibly catchy, so be warned. Go see them, and you'll be humming their songs in your head for days after!

Mest, as with the last several times I've seen them live (Warped '03, opening for Good Charlotte's Young and the Hopelees tour) stayed with their usual dynamics: energenic preforming mixed with humor ("Don't do drugs. Don't do drugs. Save 'em for me." - Tony Lovato)
A predominant amount of their songs came off their newest self-titled Maverick Records release, including the hit single "Jaded (These Years)", with the audience filling in where Good Charlotte's Benji Madden does guest vocals on the CD. My personal favorite off the CD, "Promices", made an appearance as well, with guitarist Jeremiah Rangel taking over vocal duties.
Not all the songs were new, as both "Fuct Up Kid" (from Destination Unknown) and "Fuck the Greyhound Bus" (the bonus track off of Wasting Time) were featured in encores.
All in all, Mest impressed me again, even though Tony didn't get naked on stage this time (see Warped '03), Matt Lovato and his bass stayed on the opposite side of the stage from me, and Nick Gigler didn't show off wis mad drumming skills as much (I think this was near the end of their tour). I look forward to seeing them play Axis again this fall (November) before going into the studio once again.
