Kournikova flops at US Open
Anna Kournikova has lost to an 18-year-old Indonesian in the first round of the US Open.

Anna Kournikova crashes out of the US Open at the first hurdle

Kournikova lost 6-3 6-0 to Angelique Widjaja, making her first ever senior appearance at Flushing Meadows.

The Russian has now been eliminated from the first round of every Grand Slam this year.

She is now ranked the fourth best player in her home country.

Kournikova was roundly jeered as she left the court after making 40 unforced errors in the 44-minute match.

Kournikova seemed unprepared and off-balance as the 18-year-old Widjaja returned almost everything Kournikova dealt her.

The second set proved to be no different as Widjaja quickly barraged Kournikova with forehand returns. Kournikova finished the set with only a single winner.

Widjaja will face either American Alexandra Stevenson or France's Stephanie Foretz in the second round of the US Open.

"I didn't expect it to be this way at all," said a visibly upset Kournikova.

"I thought I had a pretty good draw. I didn't play well at all. I wasn't in the match. I was just not there.

"I think I just played totally the wrong way," she said. "I was going for winners after a second shot. I set (the point) up and then it was just a mistake. Sometimes I went for too much on the wrong shots.

"If I'm behind the baseline or something like that, I went for too much. I made a million mistakes.

"I should have gave her more chance to hit the balls because I didn't give her any chances. It was kind of weird because I had all the opportunities. I set up the point, and then when I had to put it away, I was missing it. So that was kind of horrible."
