AN UNABASHED fan of Anna Kournikova, Bill Moriarty of San Francisco
reports from the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford: "Her workout was more
like football practice than diva-dom -- sore feet, sweat, no entourage,
unsympathetic coach, hands-on-knees breath shortages, bounced racket. So she
works for that $20 or $30 mil."
Moriarty, an attorney in real life, says of Anna's workouts: "I wonder how
many times you can go before they give you a restraining order."
-- Tennis round-the-clock, anyone? The Tennis Channel debuts later this
year, and we hope you're as excited as we are about seeing a prime-time Vitas
Gerulaitis retrospective. Billie Jean King, a member of the channel's advisory
board, says fans will be "ravenous" to get the channel. You bet. And let's
hope this means another game-show-hosting stint for John McEnroe.
-- Coming soon on the Tennis Channel: Marat Safin's 10 Best Tantrums. The
Russian star estimates he has tossed at least 150 rackets into courtside trash
cans over his career. Come on, Marat, do your part. Use the recycling can.
