Leave it to Britney Spears, the "Oops! I did it again" girl, to have us up in arms this spring. Did you catch her performance at the MTV-over-produced Super Bowl halftime show this year?
For us fashion mavens posing as football fans on Super Bowl Sunday, the question was not how Spears wound up on stage with what must have been Bizarro Aerosmith. The real question was: Why was she wearing an athletic sock on her arm? Was she trying to keep warm in her typically skimpy outfit? Was it a tribute to last year's fallen Pets.com sock puppet? Is she single-armedly trying to bring back the leg warmer? The possibilities are endless.
What we do know is: Tube socks as arm accessories are coming. Urban Outfitters, which has stores in downtown Seattle and on Capitol Hill, is now stocking "Hot Socks." The modified tube socks have holes for your hands to poke through.
"We got a memo saying this is the new big thing," said Naomi Knapp, an Urban Outfitters merchandiser.
Apparently Spears has more selling power than Lori Petty, who sported a tube sock on her arm as "Tank Girl" in the 1995 film. And leave it to Urban Outfitters to sell for $20 a pair what you can buy in bargain six-packs anywhere else.
