Oops! . . . Britney Caught in Lawsuit

There's good news for Britney Spears, 20, and bad news. First, the bad: Philadelphia songwriters Michael Cottrill and Lawrence Wnukowski are suing the pop princess, alleging that two of the songs on her multiplatinum second album, "Oops! . . . I Did it Again," were based on one of their tunes, "What You See Is What You Get." The musicians claim that they submitted their ditty to Spears's representatives in late 1999, but, according to their legal papers, the song was rejected. Yet, according to the Associated Press, they claim two of Britney's numbers, "What U See (Is What U Get)" and "Can't Make You Love Me" -- which are credited in the album liner notes to a host of writers and producers at Sweden's Cheiron Studios, which also provided hits for the Backstreet Boys and Celine Dion -- were "virtually identical" to their song. The suit, filed late last week in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, names Spears, Zomba Recording Corp., Jive Records, Wright Entertainment Group and BMG Music Publishing. The AP received no response to its request for comment from the Spears camp. As for the good news, Wednesday's New York Post details Britney's new midtown Manhattan restaurant, Nyla (an abbreviated conjunction of New York and her birthplace of Louisiana), which is due to open June 27. The star reportedly has dishes on the menu that remind her of her childhood (grilled salmon with Mississippi caviar) and is responsible for the eatery's color scheme (pink, orange and red). Expected on opening night, says the Post: former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Gov. George Pataki, David Copperfield and, possibly, Jennifer Lopez and Cher.
