Britney Spears Married?!
Jan 3, 2004
by Marcus Errico

Did Britney Spears commit her biggest oops yet?

After a solid year of image adjustments, from wanton carousing to topless posing to Madonna macking, the pop tart just may have pulled her most un-Mouseketeer stunt to date. She reportedly got married in a quickie Vegas ceremony.

According to various news outlets, Spears tied the knot with Jason Allen Alexander, a childhood pal from her hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana. The Las Vegas Review-Journal says the two 22-year-olds were granted a marriage license from the city early Saturday morning.

Spears' no-frills nuptials went down shortly afterward at the Little White Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas Strip, with the Britster eschewing the designer-gown route for a baseball hat and jeans, according to People.com. She was escorted down the aisle by a hotel bellman, and none of her family or friends was in attendance.

Representatives for Spears were not immediately available Saturday night.

People.com, citing unnamed sources "close to the singer," reports that Spears' vow-swapping foray was a joke "that went too far." The Website says Spears plans to annul the union ASAP, a move that would dwarf even Shannen Doherty's.

According to the site, Spears and Alexander got matrimonial-minded Friday, after (surprise!) a night of heavy-duty partying at the hipster Ghostbar in the Palms Casino Hotel. Spears had the resort shuttle her and her newly betrothed via limo to the chapel, a Sin City destination of choice for celeb I-do's, playing host to Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Natalie Maines, Michael Jordan and even Frank Sinatra.

It was the Palms bellman who reportedly chauffeured the couple to the county courthouse sometime after 12:30 a.m. to obtain their wedding license; he then doubled as the one who gave away the bride back at the chapel. The ceremony was apparently recorded by the officiants, and a copy was given to Spears and her hubby.

People.com says the newlyweds retired back to the Palms for a honeymoon in one of the casino's swankiest suites. The missus reportedly spent Saturday night at a hotel restaurant with her manager, her brother, some friends and the owner of the Palms, George Maloof.

This is, of course, the first trip to the altar for Spears, who famously dated fellow popster Justin Timberlake for several years and most recently was linked to one of her backup dancers, Columbus Short. According to tabloid reports, Short left Spears in November and went back to his pregnant wife.

In an October interview with Newsweek, Spears talked about getting married and having kids--in about five years. But that was before Alexander entered the scene.

Alexander, who we presume bears no relationship or resemblance to the similarly monikered Seinfeld alum, is new on the Britney radar. He is said to be an old friend of Britney who recently reacquainted himself with her. They reportedly spent New Year's Eve at a Palms nightclub before leaving together.

Maybe the wedding news will help goose sales of Spears' latest album, In the Zone. The disc debuted at number one in November and has sold 2 million copies since--not bad, but nowhere near the 10.5 million in sales for her biggest album, ...Baby One More Time.

No word on whether Spears and Alexander plan on extending their honeymoon, but Britney has some free time before beginning rehearsals for her next tour, set to kick off March 2 in San Diego.

The Scent of Britney
March 12, 2004

Forget belting out her songs at karaoke night--now you can smell like Britney Spears.

The platinum pop princess has signed a licensing deal with Elizabeth Arden to develop her own line of scent and makeup products.

"I love perfume and cosmetics," Spears said in a press release, "and am so excited to develop my own line with Elizabeth Arden."

The first product due on the market is an eau de Brit, scheduled to land on shelves this fall.

But what to call it? Our suggestions: "Oops," "Toxic" or maybe even "Annulment."

Spears is reportedly going to be involved at every level of the line's development, in order to ensure that the products ooze her personality.

"We are delighted to be working with Britney Spears," said Paul West, president of Elizabeth Arden, in a statement. "She is a talented, fashionable woman who appeals to a young and international consumer base. Together with our department-store trade partners, we will introduce a glamorous fragrance concept to the U.S. market in the fall, and we look forward to the launch of the new brand."

The deal was arranged through Brand Sense Marketing, a Los Angeles-based licensing company.

Spears isn't the first blonde popster to sign a cosmetics deal of late-—similarly flaxen-tressed Jessica Simpson is also hawking goods with her name attached. Simpson's line, "Dessert," features edible skin-care products, though none are tuna-flavored, to our knowledge.

(Could Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty" girl products be far off?)

Apart from her foray into the marketing world, Spears has been keeping herself busy--and we're not just talking about the quickie wedding.

Her latest musical endeavor, In the Zone, has sold more than 5 million CDs, and her latest tour, the Onyx Hotel Tour, launched March 2 and continues through spring and summer with concerts in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Spears also recently sat done with E! for an exclusive interview in which she discussed her spontaneous Vegas nuptials with childhood pal, Jason Alexander, and explained that she is a reclusive person at heart.

The pop tart explained away her bridal impulse, saying she was attempting to flee the pressures of her day to day life.

"I think I was running away from something, I didn't quite know what," Spears said. "And maybe it was past things that I hadn't dealt with, you know, I had to put a head on it and be like, 'Look. It's time to really look at the situation and look at yourself and figure things out and stop running.' "

Really all Spears wants to do, if she can be believed, is stay home and crack the books.

"I like being alone, which is good I think," she said. "You know, I love reading books. I'm really a quiet kind of person right now. And so it's cool to be back and feel like yourself again."

Britney Spears: The E! Entertainment Special premieres Sunday night at 8 p.m.

Britney Tripped Up by Injury
by Sarah Hall | March 22, 2004

It was her knee against the music.

Oops! girl Britney Spears was forced to cut short an encore after her concert last Thursday in Moline, Illinois, and cancel two weekend performances after she hurt herself during a complicated dance routine.

Spears was performing a new song, "Boom Boom," when the mishap occurred, according to reports.

Perhaps she hadn't worked out all the kinks in the routine--in any case, Spears was forced to abandon the stage.

Several minutes later, she reappeared on the stage in a white bathrobe and apologized to her fans for cutting the performance short.

The "Toxic" singer had planned to continue with two more songs, but the injury was apparently serious enough to keep her out of the zone.

Spears' label, Jive Records confirmed that Spears would not be performing in Chicago on Friday as scheduled.

"Due to an unfortunate knee injury Britney Spears suffered towards the end of her show last night in Moline, Illinois, she will not be performing tonight at the Allstate Arena as scheduled," the company stated.

Spears subsequently postponed her Sunday performance in Detroit. Jive Records stated that the shows would be rescheduled sometime in April, with specific dates to be announced this week.

"Britney is resting her knee and is looking forward to resuming her tour in Atlanta on Tuesday," the label stated.

According to Ryan Seacrest, Spears has been fitted with a special knee brace that she is wearing during rehearsals. Doctors will make the final decision whether she will perform Tuesday night.

The pop princess is currently in the midst of her Onyx Hotel Tour with dates scheduled across North America and in Europe and Asia.

Her latest CD, In the Zone, has sold over 5 million copies.

Off the tour circuit, Spears recently signed with Elizabeth Arden to create a fragrance and cosmetics line.

The first product--an eau de Brit--is due to land on shelves this fall.

Britney: The Reality Series
by Josh Grossberg | April 13, 2004

Britney Spears--slave 4 reality TV?

Reps for the pop princess are pitching broadcast networks an unscripted series that would give fans an intimate backstage glimpse into Spears' life, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Titled OnTourage, the proposed behind-the-scenes series will chronicle the Oops Girl on the European leg of her Onyx Hotel Tour--see the Britster hanging with her dancers, managers and bodyguards; see her chilling on the tour bus; see her prepping for the night's new gig, that kind of stuff.

OnTourage is said to take its inspiration from MTV's The Real World and Spears' smooching buddy Madonna's Truth or Dare, the 1990 documentary of her racy Blonde Ambition Tour.

However, unlike that R-rated exhibitionist popster portrait, Spears' series is likely to be more inhibited--although we're sure to see plenty of skin, the producers will have to keep things relatively tame for the tube in this post-wardrobe malfunction world.

Britney will be doing much of the shooting herself with a handheld digital camera. She'll also serve as executive producer and narrator.

Filming is expected to get underway when the Euro tour kicks off in London on April 27, which doesn't exactly leave a lot of time for would-be buyers to make their decision.

OnTourage will reportedly run for six episodes (budgeted at $1 million apiece) as early as this summer and will undoubtedly capture the ups and downs of the road, which is something Spears knows all too well these days.

In March, the 22-year-old "Toxic" singer was forced to scrap concerts in Chicago and Detroit after blowing out her knee during a previous performance.

A few weeks later, Spears had to postpone another date in Cleveland due to an undisclosed "illness."

Britney's current road show is in support of her latest disc, In the Zone, which has so far sold 5 million copies.

Spears' camp is also reportedly in talks with Chinese promoters about playing several shows in the country later in the year.

Britney Goes Under Knife
by Joal Ryan | E! | Jun 9, 2004

Britney Spears is in a zone, all right. It's just not a good one.

The pop tart, who has missed tour dates this spring due to a bum knee and an unspecified illness, was on the disabled list again after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday in New York.

It appeared as if the knee that went under the knife was the same one that buckled under Spears during a dance routine Mar. 18 onstage in Moline, Illinois. A spokesman told Reuters the current problem's the result of "an old dance injury."

Per a statement from Jive Records, Spears' most recent mishap occurred precisely at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday as she did her thing, for the purposes of a music-video shoot, under the tracks of the L train in the picturesque New York City borough of Queens.

"She was immediately taken to a local hospital where she received an MRI scan. It was discovered by the doctors on call that she has floating cartilage in her knee," the singer's record label said.

The statement did not say--and a message left with Spears' Jive rep was not returned Wednesday--how long, if at all, the "Oops" singer will be laid up.

Spears' star-crossed Onyx Hotel tour, which opened for business in March, was scheduled to resume June 22 in Hartford, Connecticut. Upcoming dates include a June 29 gig in Cleveland, which is a make-good on a previously canceled concert.

The Mar. 18 injury, suffered as she performed a song perhaps appropriately titled "(I Got That) Boom Boom," forced Spears to cancel dates in Chicago and Detroit.

On Apr. 1, she nixed her originally scheduled Cleveland appearance due to an "illness."

Tuesday's injury came as Spears lent her lip-synching expertise to a video for "Outrageous," the upcoming fourth single off her In the Zone album. Per Jive, she went weak in the knee right after completing a scene with ladies-of-the-night-man Snoop Dogg.

On paper anyway, her tour is to run in the United States through mid-August, before deplaning for Europe and Asia.

With Spears immobile, lawyers in Utah may have an easier time tracking down the globe-trotting diva. Salt Lake City's KUTV-TV Website reported Wednesday that attorneys for a diet-pill manufacturer there have tried, unsuccessfully, since November to serve Spears with a lawsuit over her accusations that the company misused her image in an ad.

Britney's Paparazzi Run-In
by Lia Haberman | June 22, 2004

Don't tread on Britney Spears. The pop princess' protective mama might just tread back.

That's what one unlucky paparazzo learned this weekend when Lynne Spears allegedly backed her car into the overly aggressive photographer.

Spears, her mom and sister, Jamie Lynn, were at a Santa Monica pet store this past weekend picking out pooches--a white Yorkie-Poo for the popster and a brown Pomeranian for little sis.

The pet parade attracted a pack of photos hounds, who crowded around the Spears women as they boarded Lynne's Toyota Scion SUV (we assume the Beemer was in the shop?).

According to photos and witness testimony on fansite World of Britney, a member of the paparazzi moved in for a money shot as Mama Spears was pulling away.

The shutterbug, Colin Reavley, fell to the pavement, claiming Lynne had run over his foot.

The visibly shaken pop star apparently wanted to make a run for it, but her mother stayed put until police and paramedics arrived on the scene.

Reavley was taken to a hospital, treated and released without any broken bones. His family is purportedly considering retaining a lawyer.

But cops didn't think Lynne was to blame. They didn't give her so much as a ticket, chalking the incident up to "paparazzi misconduct."

A statement from the singer's camp is expected later Tuesday.

It's been a bad couple of weeks for Spears. Earlier this month she underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to correct a dance injury. Then last week she was forced to shutter her Onyx Hotel Tour while she recovered.
