The Mega Marines

No, I am not kidding. Really and honestly, I am doing a profile on the G.I. Joe Mega Marines. Rather than break it down into several separate ones, I figured I’d save the neon-haters some trouble and cram it all into this one, so they can just skip this one if they want to!

Back in the very early nineties, I was unsure of my status as a G.I. Joe Collector. I was getting ready to graduate from high school and go on to college, and was certain that my childhood love would not translate well to the University of Vermont. Back in those days, my area was even more sparse than it is now for the purpose of searching for toys, so I would make a monthly trek down to southern New Hampshire to do my toy shopping. It was like a toy haven down there, with three TRU’s, a handful of Wal-Marts and a smattering of K-B’s all in one location. I had to travel over an hour to get there, but it was well worth it for the amount of shopping I could do in that one trip. So anyway, that one summer day in 1992 I went on my monthly shopping trip. There were usually two towns I stopped into, and I’d hit the two TRUs in those towns, and possibly one more in between, if my hunting hadn’t been too good that day. Well, this day hunting was GREAT. After I had stopped at my first TRU, I had scored a handful of the new G.I. Joe figures. I cannot for the life of me remember exactly which ones they were, but I was happy with them, nonetheless. So I began my drive back. I happened to stop on the way back in a town I didn’t normally, and lo and behold, there was another Toys R Us! Well, I couldn’t help myself, so I went in and saw them on the pegs. The Mega Marines. Staring at me from their oversized cards with their bright colors and wild armor. Up until this point, I had NO idea these guys were even coming out. I was floored. Needless to say, I returned all of “regular” Joe figures that I had found that day, and picked up the whole set of Mega Marines! That’s how impressed I was by these beauties!

And yes, that is quite a build up to this review, but I really want folks to see where I stand. I hate neon on G.I. Joe figures as much as the next guy, but I’m sorry…the Mega Marines are…different. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I could ever make this subgroup co-exist in my normal Joe universe…it just wouldn’t work. But they do have their place. At this point in time, the United States Military is working on some Top Secret projects…some projects called "Exoskeletons" which I’m sure many of you are familiar with. In my little universe, the "Exoskeleton" project was started, using G.I. Joe as the guinea pigs, and the Mega Marines were the result.

Now, I am not going to review ALL of the Mega Marines here…I don’t want to bore anyone. But I did choose my four favorites, and will go over them in relative detail, and perhaps by the time I’m done, maybe, just maybe I’ll have converted some people. ;)

First off, is Gung Ho. Don’t ask me why, but this suit fits him PERFECTLY. He just looks like a natural in it, from the cool looking “marbleized” plastic, to the elaborate composite body armor. Even the bright yellow colors just seem to…work. I wouldn’t imagine anyone would be sneaking around with this amount of armor on anyway! What do the colors matter?
Anyway, he is the perfect choice for the Mega Marines leader. First of all, he’s a Marine. Second of all, he is a large, imposing figure, made even more so by the Kevlar/fiberglass armor designed to fit as well as serve a purpose. The green bodysuit is a flex-Kevlar polymer, alloying for free range of movement, yet protection from most conventional firearms. The yellow armored plating is a Fiber-Titanium composite, providing incredible protection without hindering too much flexibility. The mechanics on the arms and legs are interwoven into a circuit-laden endoskeleton which support Gung Ho’s muscle mass, increasing his strength tenfold. There are mini "jump-jets" in his boots, allowing him to jump further and move more quickly than a normal soldier. Combined together, he is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, although far too expensive to use too often.
As you can probably see, I already have some stories in the works for these guys in Dio-Story form, and I cannot wait to use them and hopefully prove their usefulness to the untrusting G.I. Joe community! This figure is one of the best detailed figures of the line, from the hidden knives to the elaborate armor and circuitry, right down to the stamped “1” on his chest plate. The green-swirled plastic looks super cool and even with the yellow, it all comes together very, very nicely!

Next in line is Clutch. Often called the "construction worker Clutch" by some disapproving Joe-heads, I do think he has some redeeming qualities. Is he bright orange? Well…yeah. But like Gung Ho, for some reason, it just…works. Clutch is the Mega Marines mechanic and technology-junkie, always tinkering to make the suits work better. He is the driver and the maintenance man, which could be why he is dressed in such garish colors. His chest armor is a little thicker because he would be most likely to be the first being shot at, since he is in the driver’s seat. All in all, his armor would serve much the same purpose as Gung Ho’s, except for being a little lighter in the arms to allow him to move more freely while steering.
Like Gung Ho, Clutch’s armor is very nicely detailed! I think that were it not for the bright orange color, this would be a favorite among Joe fans. Simply add a little five o’clock shadow, and it resembles the man from New Jersey perfectly, and to me, this figure works as Clutch. The colors blend well together, with the yellow, orange, and lighter green, and I love the little touches like small pen-light attached to the side of his hat and the microphone that leads down to his mouth. I can really see the Mega Marines in the midst of a gunfight, coordinating their movements without even having to move. This group really reminds me of a commando team during the time of the "Aliens" movie, and my love for the movie must spill over to my love for these figures.

Their armor is much more sleek than the Joe Mega Marine’s, which would allow them swifter movement. Cobra, not so concerned with their troops safety, evidently cut some of the protection to allow for a swifter moving troop. Which would make sense for Cobra’s hit and run strategies I imagine they would often employ. Despite their armor being somewhat lacking, though, I would think that the strength enhancers would be integrated into the body-suit which would give them their edge. Not enough power to take out Gung Ho, but enough to pretty much lay out any normal troops. They also have very nicely detailed thrusters on the bottoms and backs of their sleek boots, which would indicate a viciously swift attack strategy, searing through, striking, and vanishing into the night. Their armor is built well, and molded wonderfully built to withstand a lot of punishment. I could also see the Mega Vipers as environmental troopers, with their enclosed helmets, spare air supply on the left leg, and the air hose molded to the facemask. They could double as jump-troops, or even underwater assault specialists.

Now, anyone who can find problems with THIS guy, I would really have to question. Mirage is by FAR my favorite Mega Marine (with Gung Ho a close second), and I think he would fit in well with the G.I. Joe Team in general. His colors are much more muted than the others, opting for greens and blacks instead of oranges and yellows. Which fits Mirage perfectly. I would definitely consider this particular Marine a fast attack specialist, no doubt in my mind! His armor is sleek and toned back for quick movement and rapid strikes. He has eye protection to allow for the wind shear that would surely be brought on by the speeds that he moves. His feet are huge, which would house powerful jump jets and rear thrusters, carrying him at insane speeds and allowing for larger than life movements. I can see him speeding in, flipping over a Cobra Hiss tank, and then slamming it with one of his many grenades from behind. He would be the recon man, and the point man, driving a wedge into the enemy forces that Gung Ho, Clutch and Blast Off could then plow through.
Mirage is an asset to the Joe team, and to the Mega Marines in particular. Like the others, his outfit is WAY too expensive to use often, but when needed, he can single handedly perform the operation of a 10-man recon force, moving quickly, quietly, and even forcefully if need be. His goggles can magnify his vision as well as allow him to see through certain objects, and will also serve as a H.U.D. and tracking station during combat. His aim would be impeccable with the help of this and his skills unmatchable. The detailing on Mirage is absolutely great, as it is with all of the Marines, and yet his colors are a lot more reasonable. His scattering of grenades, wires, and little touches of armor plating really make this figure fantastic, and an asset to any collection.

Sure, the Mega Marines are neon. Yeah, they helped bring about Spring-Loaded weapons and the oft-hated weapons trees. But even though they are such outcasts, they all have their place, given the chance and the thought that they deserve.
