Outback

Outback was one of those limbo characters from 1987 who never got their proper due in either medium of G.I. Joe. Granted, he was involved in an excellent storyline in the comic where a few of the Joes got captured in Borovia, but when G.I. Joe: The Movie came out at the end of the Sunbow cartoon’s run, only a select group of Joes were featured there. "The Rawhides" were only a small batch of the great Joe offerings from that year, and quite unfortunately, were not handled that well, in my opinion. Falcon, Jinx and Chuckles were treated deplorably and God only knows why they featured Big Lob rather than a much more deserving actual Joe character. There were so many other potentially great Joes from that series, like Sneak Peek, Crazylegs and Fast Draw that I have no idea why they were not represented better. Outback is, in my opinion at the very top of this list.

Outback is a Survival Expert. I really don’t think a lot of people have an appreciation for what this entails. Surviving off the land and nature itself, while maintaining the physical condition he does is a testament to his training. Add to that his proficiency with firearms and overall physical strength, and you have a Joe unmatched in any environment whatsoever.

Outback is quite simply a monster. He is HUGE. His T-shirt is strained against his broad chest and his arms are very well muscled. In terms of size, he would give Gung Ho and Roadblock a run for their money. But his mold has so much more to it as well. His long hair and bandana are molded very well and with great detail. His t-shirt is a nice touch, maintaining a simplified look, but still being quasi-militaristic. It gives him a nice relaxed feel, and I could see him in a forest clearing, relaxing after a particularly difficult hunt. His camouflage legs are also very nicely detailed and just add enough to the whole figure.

Outback’s accessories are also stellar. He has a nice large backpack, which would easily be large enough to hold any supplies he might require. His machine gun is very nice as well, a unique weapon, but very cool. Then there are the two best accessories to this figure, and unfortunately the two most easily misplaced. His web gear and leg flashlight. These two small accessories really compliment the figure perfectly! Since a couple weeks after I first got Outback, I hadn’t played with him fully accessorized. His flashlight and web gear had been lost quickly. Just last year I replaced my old Outback with a fully equipped one, and it was some of the best money I’d ever spent on Joes. He is a GREAT specimen, and one that does not get nearly enough press. Unfortunately, Outback is better known for his garish Construction Worker outfit that was going to integrate him into the Eco-Warriors. I highly prefer this version and eagerly await Big Brawler’s release this fall, using this terrific, classic mold.
