Beyond Control, Missing Scene
Standard disclaimers apply.
Hi, all.
Okay, I can't resist, delete now if you don't like fic. I've had this thought for a really long time (years) but
never wrote it down,
so here it is. For those who need their memory prompted, (because not everyone has cable, or lives in the U.S.,
or has seen the show recently) in "Beyond Control", a KGB agent arrives in town to see John Firman, who
is shown to be already dead. Control arranges a meeting with McCall in an isolated spot (Mickey keeping watch to
make sure no-one eavesdrops) outside while McCall goes into what looks like (to me at least) an abandoned train
station. Control reveals he needs help, McCall turns him down at first, Control assures him it's for him personally
not for the Company, McCall finally agrees. It turns out John Firman was working for Exden Inc., an entity Control
was involved with, papers have gone missing, Control needs them found. Firman had a niece, whose place was searched.
Mickey, McCall and Control make contact with her, and she and Mickey go to search her apartment for a clue, while
Control shows McCall where Corbal's (or whatever the spelling is) boss is (enjoying a meal at a restaurant). Control
is caught by Corbal, McCall receives a phone call and meets with Corbal, who has placed Control inside a casket,
a nasty looking needle very close to Control's face. If Control moves, the drug in the needle will kill him. McCall
is told to return with the missing papers (mentioned again in Trial By Ordeal) by midnight, or Control will die.
McCall says he doesn't have the papers, and Corbal tells him to get them or Control will be killed. Meantime, Mickey
and Elaine have figured out where the papers are and Mickey retrieves them. McCall returns to his apartment where
Mickey and Elaine are waiting, it's revealed her uncle was a traitor who was working for the KGB. Mickey and McCall
arrange a little insurance, then go to the meeting, as does Elaine (who's waiting outside). Elaine comes in, Corbal
uses it to get away, McCall goes after him, and tells Mickey to look after Control. They're in a casket factory.
This is where my ficlet starts.
McCall patted Mickey's arm. "Look after Control," he ordered, as he raced after Corbal.
"Sure, give me the easy job," Mickey grumbled, as he hurriedly strode over to Elaine. "You okay?"
he asked, concerned.
"Y-yes, I suppose so," she stuttered.
"Good. We'll be leaving soon," he assured her, then walked over to the casket that held Control. "Guess
this is the perfect time to ask
for a raise," he mused out loud.
Control, mouth taped shut, glared at the agent.
"If you don't want to give me one, just say so," Mickey grinned cheekily, as he pulled out a pair of
wire cutters to snip off the
needle, carefully leaving the tape for last. Snip. Silence. "Okay, I'll take that as a 'yeah' about the raise,"
he joked. Both he and
Control knew he deserved it; both knew he probably wouldn't get it.
"This is going to hurt, sorry." Mickey pried loose a corner of the tape, then ripped the tape off.
"I doubt you're sorry at all," Control said drily as Mickey finished freeing him.
"Well, maybe not," Mickey smiled.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome." Mickey held out his hand to help Control out of the coffin. "Try not to need one
for a long time, okay?"
"I plan not to."
Mickey walked over to Elaine, and Control quickly headed to the entrance, to find out what was taking Robert so
long to deal with
Corbal.
