The Barnum's rig!
In the late 1800's, Circus Crackers- animal shaped cookies- were being imported from England. To answer the demand for fancy baked goods, American bakers began making their own versions. In 1902, Animal Biscuits assumed the legal trademark name "Barnum's Animals" under the National Biscuit Company banner. This name was later purchased by baking conglomerate "Nabisco", and is still the registered name for this line of cookies. Although not quite as popular as they were before juice boxes, fruit roll ups, and the microwave goodies of today came along, these tasty little treats are still sold in most major supermarkets.
