It came to me with no landing gear, destroyed decals, and missing a back door. Since I couldn't replace the back door (this is the only trailer molded in this color) I figured that this would be a great candidate for a flatbed conversion.
Pretty Sad, Huh?
So off comes the roof, and it gets used for the upper portion of the flatbed. The landing gear was handmade, and the spare tire carrier came off of an old tanker I had disassembled (see the Union 76 Kenworth I also modified).
The I.C.C. bar was also handmade, and the stakes were fancy toothpicks. The lumber load was cut down wood from my tablesaw scrap, and the landscape timbers in the center were also fancy toothpicks.
Gorgeous, isn't it??
Here's a shot with the load taken off of the bed. I plan on replacing the load with rough hewn logs in the future, but I need to dry them for a few months in a jig to ensure that they stay straight. This trailer was matched up with Kidco's 1979 California Hauler Kenworth. I think it makes for a darned good looking truck. It will look even better when the true lumber load is ready! The lumber load will (of course) be tied down with some 1:50 scale chain once I find some that looks convincing.
If only Kidco had done this!
