~Buffy's Angel dream~

Buffy is standing on a beach, in the day, by the surf. Angel comes up from behind and wraps his arms around her waist.

Buffy(turns her head to the side and touches his face): "How did you find me here?"

Angel: "If I was blind I would see you."

Buffy: "Stay with me."

Angel: "Forever, that's the whole point. I'll never leave." (whispers in her ear) "Not even if you kill me."

She then wakes up.

BEAUTY AND THE BEASTS

~Giles and Buffy's 'What if Angel came back' talk~

Giles finds Buffy asleep in the library, surrounded by books on Acathla and demon dimensions. She tells him that she had a really vivid dream that Angel came back, and it had brought up some questions.

Buffy: "Let's just pretend for a second that..Angel somehow found his way back to Sunnydale. What would he be like?"

Giles: "Really can't say. From what is known about that dimension, it would suggest a-a world of brutal torment. And..time moves quite differently there, so-"

Buffy: "I remember. So he would've been down there for hundreds of years."

Giles: "Yes."

Buffy: "Of torture."

Giles: "It would take someone of extraordinary..will, and character to survive that and, ah, retain any semblance of self. Most likely he'd be a monster.

Buffy: "A lost cause."

Giles: "Maybe. Maybe not. From my experience there are..two types of monster, the first *can* be redeemed or more importantly *wants* to be redeemed."

Buffy: "And the second type?"

Giles: "The second is void of humanity. Cannot respond to reason, or love."

REVELATIONS

~The guilt trip Giles lays on Buffy about Angel~

The gang all finds out about Angel being back. They talk, and argue, about it with Buffy. Eventually Giles bails her out of it. When the rest of them leave, she goes into his office to thank and explain. He tells her to be quite.

Giles: "I won't remind you that the fate of the world often lies with the Slayer, what would be the point? Nor shall I remind you that you've jeapordized the lives of all that you hold dear..by harbouring a known murderer. But saddly I must remind you that Angel tortured me..for hours..for pleasure. You should've told me he was alive, you didn't. You have no respect for me, or the job I perform."

Giles sits down, his back turned to her. She remains silent, obviously feeling guilty. She then turns and leaves.

LOVERS WALK

~Spike's 'You're not friends' talk~

Buffy and Angel are helping Spike get supplies for a love spell that Willow's doing to get Dru to come back to him(he has Willow and Xander trapped). Buffy and Angel are currently denying their love for each other, claiming to be 'friends'. Spike gives them a speech.

Spike: "You're *not* friends. You'll never be friends. You'll love each other 'till it kills you both. You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other 'till it makes you quiver but you'll never be friends. Love isn't brains, children, it's blood - blood screaming inside of you to work its will. I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it."

Buffy and Angel glance at each other.

~Buffy's 'We're not friends' talk with Angel~

Buffy enters the mansion Angel's staying at. He turns around.

Angel: "Hey. I was wondering when you were coming."

Buffy: "I'm not coming back. We're not friends, we never were. And I can fool Giles, and I can fool my friends, but I can't fool myself...or Spike for some reason. What I want from you, I can never have. You don't need me to take care of you anymore, so I'm gonna go."

Angel: "I don't accept that."

Buffy: "You have to."

Angel: "Look, there's gotta be some way we can still see each other."

Buffy: "There is. Tell me that you don't love me."

She turns and leaves as Angel remains silent. He sits down, with a pained look on his face.

THE WISH

~In the alternate reality, where Angel tells Buffy he waited for her~

The alternate reality Buffy is at the Bronze, looking for the Master. She sees Angel chained in a cage and walks by.

Angel: "Buffy. Buffy Summers. It's you. I mean, you don't remember..how could you?"

Buffy: "How did you know my name?"

Angel: "I waited. I waited here for you. But you never...I thought I was supposed to help you."

Buffy: "You were gonna help me?"

Angel: "The Master rose. He let me live, to punish me. I kept hoping maybe you'd come. My destiny."

AMENDS

~The immensly powerful Angel/Buffy scene near the end of 'Amends'~

Buffy finds Angel outside, waiting for the sun to rise on an overlook of Sunnydale.

Buffy: "Angel."

Angel(looking out at the rest of Sunnydale): "I bet half the kids down there are already awake, lying in their beds, sneaking downstairs, waiting for day."

Buffy: "Angel please. I need you to get inside. There's only a few minutes left."

Angel: "I know. I can smell the sunrise long before it comes."

Buffy: "I don't have time to explain this, you just have to trust me. That thing that was haunting you-"

Angel: "It wasn't haunting me..it was showing me."

Buffy: "Showing you?"

Angel: "What I am."

Buffy: "Were."

Angel: "And ever shall be. Look, I wanted to know why I was back..and now I do."

Buffy: "You don't know. Some great evil takes credit for bringing you back, and you buy it? You just give up?"

Angel: "I can't do it again Buffy, I can't become a killer."

Buffy: "Then fight it."

Angel: "It's too hard." (he shakes his head) "Mm-mm"

Buffy: "Angel please, you have to get inside-"

Angel: "They told me to kill you. You were in the dream, you know. They told me to lose my soul in you and become a monster again."

Buffy: "I know what it told you. What does it matter?"

Angel: "Because I wanted to! Because I want you so badly! I want to take comfort in you. And I know it'll cost me my soul, and a part of me doesn't care. Look, I'm weak..I've never been anything else. It's not the demon in me that needs killing Buffy, it's the man."

Buffy: "You're weak, everyone is..everybody fails. Maybe this evil did bring you back, but if it did it's because it needs you, and that means that you can hurt it. Angel, you have the power to do real good, to make amends. But if you die now then all that you ever were was a monster. Angel please, the sun is coming up-"

Angel: "Just go."

Buffy: "I won't."

Angel: "Do you think this is simple? Do you think there's an easy answer? You can never understand what I've done. Now go."

Buffy: "You're not staying here, I won't let you!"

Angel(pushes her away): "Leave!"

She punches him and he pushes her to the ground. He pulls her up to face him.

Angel: "Am I a thing worth saving, huh? Am I a righteous man? The world wants me gone."

Buffy: "What about me? I love you *so* much. And I tried to make you go away. I killed you and it didn't help." (She pushes him away, then continues) "And I hate it. I hate that it's so hard, and that you can hurt me *so* much. I know everything that you did because you did it to me. God, I wish that I wished you dead. I don't. I can't."

They both get up.

Angel: "Buffy please. Just this once..let me be strong."

Buffy: "Strong is fighting. It's hard, and it's painful, and it's everyday. It's what we have to do, and we can do it together. But if you're too much of a coward for that, then burn. If I can't convince you that you belong in this world, then I don't know what can. But do *not* expect me to watch, and don't expect me to mourn for you because-"

She stops as it starts snowing for the first time ever in Sunnydale(also, the temperatures were expected to remain in the high 70s for the rest of the holiday weekend). Because of the snowfall, the sun doesn't show through the clouds at all that day.

HELPLESS

~Buffy's 'What if I weren't the Slayer' talk with Angel~

Buffy's at the mansion with Angel. He gave her a book for her birthday which she is flipping through while sitting by the fire with him. On one page he wrote 'Always'.

Buffy: "Thank you. It's beautiful."

Angel: "You really like it?"

Buffy: "'Course I do. It's sweet, and thoughtful, and..full of neat words to learn and say like 'wilt' and 'henceforth'."

Angel: "Then why'd you seem more excited last year when you got a severed arm in a box?"

Buffy: "I'm sorry. It's just suddenly there's this chance that my calling's a wrong number and..it's just freaking me out a little."

Angel: "That's understandable."

Buffy: "Angel, what if I *have* lost my power?"

Angel: "You lived a long time without it, you can do it again."

Buffy: "I guess. But what if I can't? I've seen too much, I know what goes bump in the night. Not being able to fight it..What if I just hide under my bed all scared and helpless? Or what if I just become pathetic? Hanging out at the old Slayers' home, talking peoples' ear off about my glory days..showing them Mr. Pointy, the stake I had bronzed."

Angel: "Buffy, you could never be helpless or boring, not even if you tried."

Buffy: "Don't be so sure." She gets up and starts walking around before continuing. "Before I was the Slayer I was..well I..I don't wanna say..shallow but.. Let's say a certain person, who will remain nameless..we'll just call her Spordelia..looked like a classical philosopher next to me. Angel, if I'm not the Slayer..what do I do? What do I have to offer? Why would you like me?"

Angel: "I saw you before you became a Slayer."

Buffy: "What?"

Angel: "I watched you. And I saw you called. It was a bright afternoon out in front of your school. You walked down the steps...and, um..and I loved you."

Buffy: "Why?"

Angel: "'Cause I could see your heart. You held it before you for everyone to see, and I worried that it would be bruised or torn, and more than anything in my life I wanted to keep it safe. To warm it with my own."

Buffy: "That's beautiful." She hugs him as she says it, then says "Or taken literally, incredibly gross."

Angel: "I was just thinking that too."

THE ZEPPO

~Buffy's 'I can't watch you die again' talk with Angel~

They're at the mansion on the night the Hellmouth is going to open. They know that the first demon to come out'll be the one that did when Buffy died trying to kill the Master.

Buffy: "I don't know what to do."

Angel(stands up from where he was sitting): "Then let me decide for you. I can face this thing."

Buffy: "You *can't*."

Angel: "Look, I c- I can at least buy you enough time for Willow's spell to bind it. Buffy, this is worse than anything we've ever faced. Hey, it's the only way."

Buffy: "I *can't* watch you die again."

Angel: "Hey." (he touches the side of her face with his hand) "I love you."

Buffy: "I love you."

Angel: "Nothing can change that. Not even death."

Buffy(quickly pulls his hand away): "*Don't* talk to me like that. *You* may be ready to go, but *I* am not ready to lose you. Okay, this is *my* fight..and if you won't do it my way then you're-"

Is interrupted as Xander clears his throat to announce his presence. After realizing that this is a bad time(they're both teary-eyed and silent), he leaves. Buffy and Angel then look back to each other, emotion-filled expressions on their faces.

ENEMIES

~Buffy's 'I need a break' talk with Angel~

Buffy enters the mansion, and Angel looks pretty upset about having to pretend to be Angelus again(in order to fool Faith) as he sits by the wall.

Angel(avoiding her gaze): "How ya doin'?"

Buffy: "Been better."

Angel: "Not hard to believe. You were a real soldier last night Buffy." He stands up.

Buffy(looking not-so-sure): "That's me. One of the troops."

Angel: "I know how hard it was for you."

Buffy: "I really doubt that."

Angel: "If there's anything I can do to make it better..." His expression is becoming more pained.

Buffy(who looks as if she's having an inward struggle): "Look..I know you only did what I asked...and we-we got what we wanted."

Angel(looking extremely pained): "I never wanted to go that far." He shakes his head as he says it.

Buffy: "I know that. It's not even a question of it. It's just..after..." Her voice breaks with emotion, the pain obvious. "I need a little bit of a break." The pain in Angel's eyes(which are tear-filled) is obvious, and his gaze breaks from hers. He swollows. "Please?" she asks. He slowly gives a barely seeable nod, and she turns to leave.

Angel: "You still my girl?" He asks, causing her to stop in her tracks. She turns to him.

Buffy: "Always." She turns again, walking away..leaving him alone with an expression of pain on his face.

THE PROM

~The Buffy/Angel break-up scene~

They're in some underground tunnels hunting vamps, and the subject of the prom is mentionned. She notices his jumpiness at the subject, and asks about it. He tells her she shouldn't get too 'invested' in it, and she tells him that's the kind of stuff she's supposed to get 'invested' in (growing up and such). He agrees with her.

Buffy: "Then what? What's with the dire?"

Angel(turning to face her): "It's, uh..it's nothing."

Buffy: "No, you have 'something' face."

Angel(hesitating): "I think we need to talk. But, not now..not here."

Buffy: "No. No, if you have something to say, then say it." He's silent. "Angel, drop the cryptic. You're scaring me."

Angel: "I've been thinking..about our future. And the more I do, the more I feel like 'us'...you and me being together..is unfair to you."

Buffy: "Is this about what the Mayor said? Because he was just trying to shake us up."

Angel: "He was right."

Buffy: "No. No he wasn't. He's the bad guy." Angel moves past her.

Angel(not facing her): "You deserve more. You deserve something outside of *demons* and *darkness*." He turns to her, obviously upset. "I mean, you should be with someone who can take you into the light. Someone who can make love to you."

Buffy(moving towards him): "I don't care about that."

Angel: "You will. And children."

Buffy: "Children?! Can you say 'jumping the gun'?! I killed my goldfish."

Angel: "Today. But you have no idea how fast it goes, Buffy. Before you know it, you'll want it all. A normal life-"

Buffy: "I'll never have a normal life."

Angel: "You're right. You'll always be a Slayer. But that's all the more reason you should have a real relationship instead of this.. this freak show." A hurt look crosses her face, and her immediately regrets it. "I didn't mean that."

Buffy(walking past him): "I'm gonna go." He grabs her arm gently to stop her. She faces him.

Angel: "I'm sorry..Buffy. You know how much I love you. It kills me to say this."

Buffy: "Then don't. Who are you to tell me what's right for me? You *think* I haven't *thought* about this?"

Angel: "Have you? Rationally?"

Buffy: "No." She turns away, then back. "No, of course not, I'm just some swinny little schoolgirl, right?"

Angel: "I'm *trying* to do what's right here, okay, I'm trying to think with my *head* instead of my heart."

Buffy: "*Heart*? You have a *heart*? It isn't even *beating*." That obviously hurt him, and he just shakes his head slightly.

Angel: "Don't."

Buffy: "Don't what? *Don't* love you? I'm sorry, you know what.. I didn't know that I got a choice in that. I'm *never* gonna change. I *can't* change." There's a silent moment between them. "I *want* my life to be with *you*."

Angel: "I don't." It seems as if her heart broke with those words.

Buffy(asks quietly): "You don't wanna be with me?" He just lowers his eyes. "I *can't* believe you're breaking up with me." He turns his gaze away before looking back at her.

Angel: "Look, it doesn't mean that I don't-" She turns away from him. There's a silence before she turns back around.

Buffy(sounding helpless): "How am I supposed to stay away from you?"

Angel: "I'm leaving. After the ascension. After it's finished with the Mayor and Faith. If we survive, I'll go."

Buffy: "Where?"

Angel: "I don't know." There's a long period of silence between them. Buffy can't seem to grasp it.

Buffy: "Is this really happening?" She looks to him for the answer. He just looks back at her, and the scene fades away.

~The Buffy/Angel dance scene at the Prom~

Giles is congratulating Buffy for her accomplishments of that night.

Buffy: "Every now and then people surprise you."

Giles(noticing something across the dance floor): "Every now and then." He takes Buffy's award, and she turns to see Angel in the crowd (dressed up in a tux and stuff). They walk towards each other, eyes locked, as a *so* mood-fitting song plays in the background ("Wild horses, couldn't drag me away...").

Buffy: "I never thought you'd come."

Angel: "It's a big night. I didn't wanna miss it. It's just tonight, it doesn't mean that I, uh.."

Buffy: "I know. I mean I understand."

Angel: "Dance with me?"

She smiles in response, and they dance through the song ("Wild horses, couldn't drag me away.. wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away.. wild, wild horses, we'll ride them someday..."). It then fades out (the end of the episode).
