The Strange Cat

The Strange Cat

On a warm summer day I decided to wash clothes, so with my arm full of laundry I reached out and turned on the light switch. The large room brightened. It had a few shelves full of canned peaches, blueberries and cranberries. A dryer and washer stood in each corner of the room with the pink flowered walls shining bright. Today I was wearing my purple tee shirt with blue jean cut offs, my long light brown hair hung down loosely over my left shoulder. I entered the room and heard scratching noises in the dryer. I opened the door and I saw a ginger colored streak race from the open door of the dryer. The cat had somehow gotten trapped there.

Last week I was doing work up in the attic and Max, the cat, had decided to catch a nap. I finished, came down and shut the door. After a couple hours I heard her meowing, I followed it to where ever it came from and opened the door. Max came running full speed ahead straight to her litter box and food dish.

Another time I was making myself a sandwich from stuff in the fridge, I used cheese, butter, ham, mustard, lettuce and tomatos and I shut the fridge door. I put the sandwich together, "Oh no." I thought, I forgot the mayonnaise and a glass of milk. I opened the fridge, there was Max, eating a can of sardines.

The washer finished my clothes, I put them in the dryer. I needed to sit down, so I went into the living and sat on my big purple leather couch and beside me was Max giving herself a bath. I had her since she was a kitten. She was now 2 years old. Max looked up at me with her big green eyes and smiled. Well she looked like she was smiling, she looks so cute when she does that. A happy mother, I remembered a couple days ago, Max had her first litter of kittens. Ten all together, sleeping cozily by the fire place on my big fluffy throw rug. It was so soft, even I could propably sleep on it.

I went to my room, on the door in big baby blue colors it said my name,"Brittany" in fancy handwriting. I walked in and sat on my bed, reached for my brush on my desk and brushed my hair a little, then I heard a muffled meow, I had shut the door to my room on Max. A few minutes later I was in my night shirt and under my covers with the 10 kittens and Max on the end of my bed asleep. Soon after I was asleep only to wake up to a start as I heard Max meowing in my ear and licking my face. I sat up and I smelled smoke. I jumped out of bed and I opened my door. I looked down stairs while holding on to the banister. I saw that a fire was spreading fast from my fire place. Oh no! I forgot to turn it off. We were trapped upstairs, the stairway was slowly cathing fire. I went to my room and shut the door. I opened my window and put the kittens on the balcony and let Max out too. I closed the balcony door and climbed over the rail into the tree. I grabbed the kitties, I was glad my little nephews Jack and Phil left a little bucket and pulley on one of the branches and to think I got mad at them. I put 5 kittens in the bucket and lowered it. Max saw what I was doing so she went down the tree clinging to it with her claws. She was so smart, I smiled. As they were on the ground, Max carried her kittens out of the bucket by the neck. I pulled up the bucket again quickly and then I set the other kitties in and lowered it slowly, Max did the same taking them out. I climbed over the rail again and slowly made my way down the tree. I was now crying. I got up and ran to my next door neighbor and best friend, Emma's house. I showed them by pointing to my house that it was on fire. Emma's boyfriend Mark ran to the phone to call the fire trucks. I carried the kittens inside and Emma grabbed the other 5 and Max followed us in. I sat on Emma's bed and grabbed Max, crying. I told Emma what Max did to save my life.
