MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) - Saying "there is nothing more to do," pitcher Dennis Martinez is retiring after 22 seasons in the major leagues.

Martinez, 44, finishes with a 245-193 career record, the most wins ever by a Latin American pitcher. Last Aug. 9, he led Atlanta over San Francisco to break the previous mark of 243, set by Juan Marichal.

Martinez, who also retired midway through the 1997 only to come back with Atlanta last year, said Friday night that he may remain with the Braves as a pitching coach. He was 4-6 with a 4.45 ERA and two saves last year in five starts and 48 relief appearances with Atlanta. He also won Game 4 of the NL championship series.

President Arnoldo Aleman last year renamed Managua's national stadium for Martinez, the first Nicaraguan to play in the major leagues, calling him 'the maximum glory of national sport.'

The four-time All-Star broke in with Baltimore in 1976 and spent 11 seasons with the Orioles. He then spent seven seasons with the Montreal Expos, three with Cleveland and half a year with the Seattle Mariners.

With Montreal in 1991, he pitched a perfect game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Martinez is the seventh pitcher ever to win 100 games in both the American and National leagues, and pitched a perfect game for Montreal against Los Angeles on July 28, 1991.
