5/21/99--entry by candlelight

Power went out tonight. We were supposed to get a storm this weekend, but come on, it hasn't even started raining yet. Some parts of the city are still without power from earlier this week--I wonder if this outage isn't something related to that. Whatever. I spent 15 minutes digging through boxes (in the dark) for my tall candles, and I'm stuck with little guys. Oh, well.

Pretty cool when the lights went out, though--Sabrina had just wiggled her magical finger to turn the evil pirates into...well, something. I missed that part. There were orange sparks swirling from her fingertip and then the lights snapped off. For a second I actually thought she'd killed my TV. No kidding. I thought I was in an X-File.

I've been watching too much TV lately.

Too bad I'd finished dinner by the time the lights went. Dinner was perfect. Almost wish I'd thought to have someone over. The family sauce was done, and perfect--a true Caputo couldn't have done it better. The pasta was just right, the garlic bread was extra-garlicky (hey, I'm the only one eating it. I'll put on as much garlic as I want.) I'd like to say the homemade tiramisu was perfect as well, but I had watermelon instead. I can stir spaghetti sauce for three straight days, but even I don't have the patience for tiramisu.

The only time I left the house today, other than a few hours I spent reading on the back steps, was when I went out to the grocery store. I got the scanner law for the second time in three days, from the same store, on the same item. I walk into the store now and I head straight for the canned chili aisle. I know I have an advantage because I worked at a service desk, but geez. At least I stepped out from behind my counter to fix the problems our customers found. They have to be recognizng me by now--I have a scan error every time I go in, and it's almost always on the damn chili.

I'm not saying a word to them--I'm making too much money. So far I've gotten 3 cans of chili from that store and made a clear profit of about 8 dollars. Can't complain.

Julia goes to the V-E-T tomorrow morning. I'm going to bed early to rest up for the ordeal.
