THE LORD'S SUPPER

Historically Baptists have been very particular as to the practice of observing the Lord's Supper. It is accepted to be a pictorial ordinance given to the local church. The elements are believed to be symbolic and not literal regardless of the blessing given prior to administering. There is also no sacramental power in observing this ordinance.

The following text is a sermon that I have delivered on the subject of CLOSED COMMUNION.

INTRO : * What is the Lord’s Supper ?
1. It is a Memorial of the Lord’s death.
(1 Cor 11:24)And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

2. In the old testament they celebrated Passover in the new Jesus is our New Passover & the supper is pictorial of this.
(1 Cor 5:7)Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

WHAT TYPE OF RESTRICTIONS WERE PLACED ON THE OLD TESTAMENT PASSOVER ?
(Gal 3:24)Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

(Exo 12:43)And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof: (44)But every man's servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof. (45)A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof. (46)In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof. (47)All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. (48)And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. (49)One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you. (50)Thus did all the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they. (51)And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.

I. CLOSED TO SINNERS(V.43)
A. SEPARATION at the Lord’s table.
“No stranger”
B. We must practice Biblical Separation at the Lord’s table.
(2 Cor 6:17)Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
C. A lost man has no more business taking the Lord’s Supper than he does being baptized.
D. God’s Order is Thus according to scripture.
(Mat 28:19)Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (20)Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

II. CLOSED TO OTHER ASSEMBLIES
A. SOVEREIGNTY at the Lord’s table.
The local church is losing its identity because of ecumenicalism.
(Verse 45) “A Foreigner” From another congregation
(Verse 47) Only the congregation of Israel
* I don’t believe in a Universal Church and I don’t believe in a denominational church.

III. CLOSED TO BACKSLIDDEN SAINTS
A. SANCTITY at the Lord’s table.(Verses 44, & 48)
* You had to be circumcised. (Pure)(Clean)
(Rom 2:29)But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

(1 Cor 11:28)But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. (29)For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

Paul told the church-members of Corinth to examine themselves before taking the Lord’s Supper. Too many backslidden church people have come to the Lord’s table without doing this. At First Baptist church, the church that I pastor, we practice closed communion.
