"Godmoma Here" by Godmoma

This month's feature song is one of the most jamming female funk songs of the early 80s that no one ever heard. Despite some hard-hitting grooves, including some super-cool rapping in the then-new hip hop market, this lead-off single from the trio of former P-Funk vocalists called Godmoma fell on the public's deaf ears. Too bad for them.
Godmoma, consisting of Cynthia "Sugar Baby" Girty, Arnenita "T Baby" Walker, and Carolyn "Baby Kay" Myles, released this song from their only album put out in 1981. The rest of the LP is more of the same fun -- combining funky licks with serious attitude. And music afficianados will notice a few guest appearances here from funkmaster Bootsy Collins and P-Funk horn alumni Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, & Greg Boyer. In fact, the album is produced by Bootsy so no wonder it's so funky!
These women sound so rough and tough it's probably not a surprise that the song didn't do so hot on the charts. In the early 80s the public may not have been ready for strong women asserting the funk. But in 2000 we're ready. And here it is. Are you ready? Enjoy!
