An uninstructed observer could have mistaken Monday night's Speculum Musicae program at Merkin Hall for a rear guard action in behalf of modern composition. An audience of 50 or so listening to four new-music veterans negotiate five pieces might indeed have seemed forlorn, but this was only new music doing its business - leading its quiet, everyday and worthwhile life removed from grand events, big-five orchestras and major concert halls.

51st Edition of the Paganini Violin Competition takes place in September 2006

For the first time in the history of this competition, participants will have to play a piece that is to be written especially for the competition, in addition to the pieces that are usually played in the preliminary stages. Azio Corghi, one of the most renowned Italian composers whose fame is well known throughout Italy and abroad, is going to write a new short piece inspired by Paganini's music that semi-finalists will have to perform together with other pieces from the classical repertoire.
