Martin Short's Biography

Martin Short was born March 26th, 1950 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He lived and worked there until he graduated from McMaster University with a degree in social work.

He began his career with small roles on American television, where he was in two series: The Associates, and I'm a Big Girl Now.

Then, in 1982, he got a role in SCTV: Network 90, the American version of the Canadian comedy series SCTV. The next year, he returned to his home country to appear in the orginal SCTV.

Short won an Emmy and a Gemini for his work, and also the attention of Canadian television producer Lorne Micheals. Short soon returned to the Sates to appear in Michaels' show Saturday Night Live, in which he stayed for only a year.

But his year on SNL was enough for America to take notice. He got his film debut in Three Amigos. The cast also included his fellow SNL stars Steve Martin and Chevy Chase.

Short has appeared in several comedies since, usually in supporting roles. He was Franck in Steve Martin's Father of the Bride films, and appeared alongside Kurt Russel in Captain Ron.

Aside from his work on the big screen, short has appeared on stage a number of time. Some of his stage credits include Godspell, What's a Nice Country Like You Doing in a State Like This?, The Apple Tree, Harry's Back in Town, Second City, and he was Snoopy in a Canadian production of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. He has also appeared on Broadway in Neil Simon's musical version of The Goodbye Girl, for which he recieved a Tony nomination and the Outer Critics Circle and Theater World Awards. He has also starred in Lawrence Kasdan's production of Four Dogs and a Bone at the Geffen Playhouse in LA.

Short has also written and produced three comedy specials. The first, Martin Short's Concert for the North Americas, won a Cable Ace award. I, Martin Short Goes Hollywood also won an Ace, and he won an Emmy for The Show Formerly Known as the Martin Short Show.
