Personally Piglet

Hi and thank you for coming to learn a little about me.

July 15, 1999
I am about 10 months old. When my People bought me they thought I had nice short hair. Well, the joke's on them. I have very long, snow-white hair that drags on the ground and gets covered in everything from cat hair, (yuck!), to dust-bunnies.

I have a black, inverted "V" on my forehead and an orange streak going back from the corner of my right eye. I wonder where they got the name "Piglet" from? Oh well, it's better than Flour, or, Bleach.

My home is quite nice. There is a bedding of pine shavings, I don't like cedar as it can give off toxic fumes. There is a 300 year old brick, (from the original Citadel in Halifax, Nova Scotia), which I like to climb on; it helps keep my nails trimmed too. Best of all is my wicker house I use for sleeping. It's great for a midnight snack. I have eaten my first two bedrooms!

Speaking of eating...I love sunflower seeds. Once in a while I get one stuck in my teeth and one of my People has to get it out for me. I also like my pellets, even if they are healthy. I really enjoy my mixed treats. The corn! The seeds! Yummy!! My all time favorite is apples. Any kind will do, but those "Granny Smith" are the best.

I recently had a trip to the veternarian. The place I went to usually looks after prize cattle and race horses but I guess they figured I was just as important a client. I had to go see them because, well, (this is so embarassing), ummm, I got neutered. I was shocked that my People wanted to do this, but after they explained their reasons I was okay with the idea, somewhat. It seems that us boy guinea pigs do not get along well with other boys, and girl guinea pigs, my goodness, I'm certainly not ready to be a family man. My People were concerned that I might get lonely and they want to get me a friend at some time. So, neutering was the only answer. I suppose friendship is worth a little sacrifice. I am pleased to say, the operation went well and I am a healthy and happy little "Piglet".

Hi again. I decided to make improvements to my wicker house this week. It needed a back door, so, I ate one out! Now, if my People decide to get me a friend, there is an entrance for both of us. Guess I was thinking ahead.
I suppose it's about time I admitted the fact that I have an addiction. I am not proud to say this but I am under the "influence" of sunflower seeds.

I was surfing the 'net last night, really, here I am:
Anyway, I found out that my sunflower addiction could be worse then I thought. My People have taken them out of my diet. Do you get the shakes from lack of sunflower seeds? I have been eating a little bit of alfalfa hay. This has helped somewhat. While I was surfing, I learned some interesting things. I now know my name in 10 different languages.
English.....Guinea Pig, cavy...bet you didn't know that one.
French.....Cobaye
German.....Meerschweinchen...that one is hard even for my little mouth.
Spanish....conejillos de Indias.
Russian.....marskaya svinka...sounds pretty.
Portugese....Porquinho da India, cobaia...sound a bit French?
Dutch.......Guinees biggetje, Cavia, marmot (obsolete).
Indonesian.....marmot.
Italian.....Porcellino d'India, cavia.
Japanese....tenjiku nezumi, marumotto...I think I like tenjiku nezumi the best. Has a nice ring to it.

Today is my most favorite day of all! I am so excited!! Today, at 3:45pm MDT, my People brought home another guinea pig. And...it's a little GIRL! Now I really hope that my operation was a sucess. My new friend is a Teddybear guinea pig. She is black and white and bits of her are so mixed that it looks grey. I think her name is going to be Cookie, after the "Oreo" type. So far, we are getting along okay. Sometimes I get too excited and start climbing on her, but maybe soon I'll settle down. When she was first put into my cage, we were both given dandylion leaves to keep us occupied until we noticed each other. Then the wheeking and purring began. You should have seen the cats! (The four that are mentioned in my other page). I dont't think the cats realize that she is the same animal as I am, she looks quite different. I hope they learn to like her as they have me. It took a few hours but we have settled down nicely. I do a lot of purring and she does a lot of squeaking. I think we are going to be a happy couple.

Having Cookie as a friend is the best thing that could have happened to me. I no longer crave sunflower seeds. She has shown me the joys of carrots! My diet has increased and I have found many new foods that I enjoy. Spinach...never tell your Mom "yuck!" until you have tasted it. Maybe it helps to have a pretty girl at your side while you are munching. But, I love the stuff. Stay tuned. I'm sure that my People will be taking pictures of us to add to the page. I am sure that you will think she is beautiful. I sure do.

Sorry to be away for so long. There has been a bit of excitement around here. Everyone is all excited about a wedding that happened on August 14. It doesn't really affect me much. I have my own exciting news. I can now show you all my gorgeous Cookie!

Did I mention before how much I love spinach? Look out Popeye! One in awhile, Cookie and I get so excited over our spinach and who gets the bigger pile, that we end up nipping each other. I'm sure we don't really mean to do it. But, spinach is spinach. Can there be anything better?
