Mecklenburg Coldblood

Other Names: Mecklenburger Kaltblut, Brandenburger

Origin: Germany

Color: Black, bay, chestnut, gray.

Avg Height: 15.3 to 16 hh

Avg Weight: 1100 to 1800 lbs

Build: Average sized head with a straight profile set on a long strong neck. Prominent withers and a strong straight back. Loins are broad and very strong with a sloping croup. Shoulders are sloped well with a wide and deep chest. Legs are sound with good bone and clean joints and the foot is round and hard.

Temperament: Docile and quiet.

Main use: Carriage horse and riding.

Special abilities: These horses are known to be strong and courageous.

History: This breed was once a prized carriage horse because of its remarkable size and endurance. But the breed has undergone changes as transportation became mechanized. The Mecklenburg is now smaller is size and has very similar to the Hanoverian. After World War II the stallions were directly controlled by the state and the mares belonged to breeders. This breed is being revived in East Germany.
