Origin: Middle and southern parts of Sweden
Color: Bay, brown, black, or chestnut
Avg Height: 15.2 to 16 hh
Avg Weight: 1200 to 1600 lbs
Build: Compact and well-built, they have a deep, muscular body, stout, hard limbs with some feather, and blue, open hoofs. A rather heavy head with a straight profile, broad forehead and full forelock, and small eyes.
Temperament: Very good disposition, docile temperament.
Main use: Some Swedish Ardennes continue to be used on the more remote farms, but the majority are now used in forestry for moving timber.
Special abilities: These very strong, active horses are noted for their equable disposition, hardiness, and longevity.
History: Based on Ardennes horses imported from Belgium during the nineteenth century, this breed was formerly much used in agriculture. Although increasing mechanization has led to a sharp reduction in its numbers, it still contains the largest proportion of Sweden's registered purebred stallions.
