Last Update Of 2000

Unfortunately not much. . . I updated the Biography and also the News section. Be sure to update your bookmarks (ha ha) from the old News section to this one, because the older one is like defunct. And in a few days, the new news site will be at a new location. For now, I've added a page for Kids and a page for Gummo. Right now, they're not so gorgeous, but I'll fix them up someday. For your New Year's Eve enjoyment, I've added some charming stories that were written by the people that claim to know Harmony. This, by the way, is how I spend my New Year's Eve, if you were curious.

happy new year!

Excerpt from DUTCH #29 magazine [September / October 2000]

"My beautiful home is in New York City. I used to love coming home to New York City from some horrible traveling. It's sad though, when I go back to New York City now, it's not the same. How could it be exciting to go back home to a city where a born rich kid like that mini-dwarf, faggot, date-raper Harmony Korine lives? What happened to New York? Remember the old days when a girl like Connecticut Chloë Sevigny would be lucky to blow for a living? David LaChapelle was just an average, purse-snatching busboy coke-whore, cleaning up Studio 54. I'm so happy I have a mansion in LA. If that Sephardic Guy Oseary didn't live in LA, it really would be a perfect city."

John Waters: Cinema Terrorist

John Waters' spiritual progency [and a doc-maker] try and place the blame.

Subject: Harmony Korine

Harmony Korine, in real cinema outlaw fashion, responded to our question regarding his current projects with a snide "suicide in order to rid myself of these meaningless questions. No one deserves anymore pats on the back. We've all worshipped those people whose backs have sores from your pats."

Well, that's okay, because we know what Mr. Korine is up to. He's been down in Kentucky assisting Gus Van Sant on the production of a film which he authored. He's about to begin work on his own project and he's penned the upcoming Larry Clark movie. Harmony also just had a big art show in L.A., where he had the A - list Hollywood hipster elite drinking water instead of wine and staring at softcore porn photos of Macauley Culkin and Rachael Miner with the sort of smug, knowing looks that conveyed their complete comprehension at the photos' "complex" hidden text.

Harmony was also selling a video of himself in O.J. blackface [with Johnny Depp as Kato Kalin] sticking his fingers up his ass and tap-dancing. The asking price was approximately $12,000. The artist himself made an appearance, looking endearingly greasy and belligerent and spending most of his time pacing back and forth through the crowd with just the cutest look of disdain in his eyes.

Then he was viciously sucker-punched [it may have been a set-up]. A scuffle ensued and all the painfully thin 'beautiful' girls with fixed scowls and perfect hair pulled out their tiny Panasonic digital cameras and started filming. Vive La Cinematic Revolucion!

Below are Harmony's abstract deconstructions on the work of John Waters:

What are your feelings on Mr. Waters' work?
The speech is pointless. The finger is speechless.

Do you have a favorite John Waters film?
"All That Jazz." His portrayal of Bob Fosse was unbiased.

Who would you name as a cinema outlaw? Someone you feel is creating original and imaginative work?
Steppin Fetchit.

MEAN magazine - July / August 2000

20 July, 2000
LAS VEGAS [Reuters] - Justin Pierce, a 25-year-old actor who starred in the controversial 1995 film Kids, was found dead after hanging himself in a Las Vegas hotel room in what authorities said Wednesday was clearly a suicide. Pierce was found hanging in his room at the posh Bellagio resort on Monday by hotel security officers and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Clark County Coroner Ron Flud. Flud said two suicide notes were found at the scene. "Hanging is the cause of death and the manner of death is suicide," Flud said. Flud said toxicology tests were pending to determine if Pierce, who appears in the upcoming film Pigeonholed with Rosanna Arquette, had any drugs or alcohol in his system. Pierce was best known for his role in Kids, [he played Casper] which portrayed the grim world of a group of New York City teenagers and sparked controversy over its depiction of young people, at least one of them infected with HIV, having unprotected sex and using drugs. Pierce, who also starred alongside Ice Cube in this year's film Next Friday and was discovered skateboarding on the streets of Manhattan, is the second young actor to hang himself in Las Vegas in the last two years.

Just a simple note, here: For an odd reason, Angelfire.Com is behaving in a very peculiar way. Sometimes when I am feeling particularly vain and would like to enjoy my own Harmony site, I get an irritating message informing me that the link is broken. Well, it isn't. So, if this happens to you, try again, or press RELOAD. When a picture won't load, right click on your mouse and select the 'Show Picture' bar. Every goddam thing on the site should be in tact.

Mr. Smith Goes To Hell
In Issue #6 of Mean magazine with the musician Beck on the cover, Kevin Smith, the director of Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma, gives Harmony a mention. Here is a snippet of the interview:

I know you were the executive producer of Good Will Hunting, but did you have any part in the casting or writing of this film?
No, not at all. The boys wrote that script and pretty much casted it themselves, and then of course Miramax brought Robin Williams to the table.
The reason why I asked is that Harmony Korine was talking shit about you in the press and he played a cameo in the film. So, I was wondering if he said those things because of that experience?
I think I've just grown accustomed to Harmony Korine not having anything positive to say about me at this point. I noticed when he was doing press on Gummo, for some reason I would come up a lot, and whenever I came up, he would say, "He's a hack, not a filmmaker; I'm a filmmaker." He's young, the dude's like twelve, right?

I have added a few more interviews in the past couple of days from Dazed & Confused and Interview. Thank - you to Jonathan Fussell, who transcripted the whole interview from D&C for me and sent it over.

First Things First . . . .
Harmony Korine wrote the script for Gus Van Sant's newest short, Easter. Grand gay porn director, Bruce LaBruce, has talked it up with Harmony and reported about it in Index magazine [the April / May issue with Bijou Phillips as the cover star]. Read more about the filming in the Interviews section. Afterward, git movin to Bruce LaBruce's page at www.brucelabruce.com.
Not suitable for people under eighteen or over fourty, priests, ministers, or Southerners.

There is a new pornographic magazine out called Richardson that Harmony has been collaborating with. The second issue should be on newsstands shortly. This magazine has not been started by photographer Terry Richardson [his works can be seen in Dutch, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, The Face, and i - D].

While we're on the subject, Terry Richardson's photography book, Hysteric Glamour, features a nude photograph of Harm. This is a photo that T.R. took of Chloë. To get a feel for this book, this is a short review that I have found:

"Fashion rebel Terry Richardson trashes this innocent artlessness with an adolescent's wild-style, fuck-you glee; his snapshots of clowns, punks, big dicks, and models popping out of their underwear are aggressively crude and anti-chic."

By the way, this book costs $75.00 whopping dollars.

Ah, and the last issue of the Swedish magazine Bibel features Chloë Sevigny in it, who has a few words to say about Harmony.

Although this is all tremendously old news, I am going to run some of these older headlines by you: Our favourite Aryan airhead Claudia Schiffer [xoxo love you Claudia] had this to say in the September issue [with Natalie Portman on the cover] of Jane magazine: "They should see me right now. I could get hired for Gummo: The Sequel." Claudia said that after admitting that she had not brushed her teeth in a few years . . . . In the July 1999 issue of Raygun magazine with Eddie Furlong on the cover, there is an article called "Wag The Dogme," which is all about experimental filmmakers restricting themselves to liberate their art. or. something. In the same issue of Raygun, artists such as Wim Wenders and Alec Empire list their top five favourite soundtracks, and Moby lists the Gummo soundtrack as his third favourite. He describes it as "An interesting combination of old field recordings, death metal and atmospheric stuff." Among his other favourites listed were Twin Peaks, The Last Temptation Of Christ, Buffalo '66, and Apocalypse Now. Also, Walter Cessna, who wrote about Chloë in the same issue of Raygun, wrote that Harmony tried to get the rights to the film Boys Don't Cry that Chloë co-starred in.

Finally, I transcripted about twelve old interviews in the Interviews section of this webpage.

I added a few new photos in the Photo Gallery, so go check those out. Keep checking back here in the next few days because I have a lot of new things to add. Remember, I just updated last night, too, so look below if you have not already.

I am very much out of the loop on all of the recent gab for Harmony. I have yet to see julien donkey - boy. I did see Election on latenight Digital Cable [the director Alexander Payne was up against HK at the Independent Spirit Awards]. The main gal was either played by a big tub of salty sun-dried ham, or Reese Witherspoon. I can't remember.

The Oscars
Did you catch Harmony at The Oscars with Chloë? If you didn't, you weren't missing much. He didn't say anything. He was wearing a tuxedo. Anyway, I was too busy checking out fab Chloë. Neither one of the two have much of a gift for gab.

From Eonline.Com
"Chloë Sevigny looks great in her black Yves St. Laurent halter dress. But what's up with her escort, the very scruffy Harmony [julien donkey - boy] Korine, who looks like Pee-Wee Herman when he was busted in that Florida porn theatre?"

Nominees For 'Best Director' At The 2000 Independent Spirit Awards
Alexander Payne - Election Harmony Korine - julien donkey - boy S. Soderbergh - The Limey David Lynch - The Straight Story Doug Liman - Go

SSAB Songs
This is very old news: On 15 January, at 10:00 PM, SSAB Songs featuring Harmony Korine and Brian Degraw played at The Knitting Factory in New York City. The Red Krayola also played that night. Somebody told me that the show was not very long, and Harmony either clucked like a chicken or ate a piece of chicken.

SSAB Songs Part 2
Aside from Forcedexposure.Com, I have found a new place where you can purchase the album from SSAB Songs: MidHeaven.Com. It is no less expensive, but it is cheaper than buying it from CDNow.Com. Here is a short review from MidHeaven.Com:

"Some messed-up music from wacko filmmaker HARMONY KORINE [Gummo] and pals. Damaged, fractal, tonal, and atonal sounds reminiscent of the glory days of Ralph Records. File under: Hip."

There you have it.

DUTCH Magazine
Dutch magazine featured a photo by Harmony from his book The Bad Son in its February issue with Karen Elson on the cover. The photo starred Macauley Culkin and either Rachel Minor, or some other brunette broad, sitting on a couch. Maybe somebody can clarify my curiousities once I scan it.

Cheap Date Magazine
I read in the most recent issue of Dazed & Confused magazine a short piece on that mysterious Cheap Date magazine. I was curious if this is sold exclusively in the UK, and if so, could a fan from the UK who is 'in the know' please send me information? I know that this magazine started up in 1999 [I read that in Jane magazine], but I read that Harmony is the running commentary boy for vintage fashion, so maybe he is in every issue. The primary reason I want to get my paws on this, though, is because British supermodel Sophie Dahl was featured in it. Who is the editor of this magazine? Is it Stella Tennant's cousin Iris Palmer? So if you can help me out... Or you know anybody...

P.S. I wish people would please sign my guestbook. Does anybody still come here? Is this not the happening place for HK fans anymore?

VIDEO: Because I have gotten some requests for Harmony Korine's talkshow appearances, I've decided to make a VHS videotape that you may have if you want to look at Harmony's appearance on Dave Letterman. I only have one appearance on tape because the rest of them I accidentally taped over. The one Harmony appearance that I do have is him on The Late Show promoting Gummo. E - mail me at cletusdp@hotmail.com if you want some interview footage of Harmony for your own, or get moving to the julien donkey - boy website to download a lot of footage of Harmful gabbing to the camera.

MUSIC: Harmony and Brian Degraw released an album with their band SSAB Songs [I guess this is the title of the band, not the title of the album] on the Omplatten label. You can buy their album at www.forcedexposure.com for $11.00 American dollars, or read reviews and promotion interviews for it when I post them sometime in the next twenty years.

MAGAZINES: This is a breakdown of this months magazines which Harmony is featured in: i - D - With Chloë Sevigny gracing the cover, Chloë and Harmony yak about films and Chloë's boating trip. ... Actually, more magazines to come soon ...

OLD NEWS: There is a lot of older news that I forgot to post on the website but wrote about in the mailing list, including various namedrops, reviews, small articles, quotes, photos, and the mysterious Cheap Date magazine that no one can seem to get their hands on. I will be posting it all whenever I get some drive.

Blah blah blah
